@SFState_WVB Falls In Five Set Thriller

POMONA, Calif. – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team found themselves in a familiar hole, down 0-2 heading into the third set.  But tonight the Gators didn't down quietly, winning the third and fourth set to force a thrilling fifth and final frame.  Ultimately, host Cal Poly Pomona came away with the win, 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 7-15), Friday evening at Kellogg Arena.

"We played well tonight, I was proud of our fight," said head coach Matt Hoffmann.  "A team with our record being down 0-2 in the second to last match of the season could easily give up, and we didn't. It's a process that they know they have to go through.  We were just too cautious in the fifth game and dug ourselves in too deep of a hole."

As a team, SF State (1-24/0-17 CCAA) hit .109, throwing down 41 kills on 183 swings with 21 errors.  No Gator finished the night in double-figures in kills, but three players finished with eight: Danielle Ryan, Haley Halpert, and Lexi Chabiniak.  Ryan also grabbed a team-high 23 digs.

From the start, the Gators attack looked stuck in neutral.  SF State recorded just 14 kills in the first two sets with seven attack errors.  In the third and fourth they responded with 25 kills.  In the fifth and final set, the Gators could only record two kills.

Cal Poly Pomona (8-17/4-12) had five players with 10 or more kills.  Alexandra Gresham recorded a match-high 18 kills, while hitting a match-high .325.

SF State returns to action tomorrow night in San Bernardino when they take on Cal State San Bernardino in the 2016 finale.  First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
