SAN FRANCISCO--- The San Francisco State Gators improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA with a convincing 79-63 win over the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos this evening before 1200 fans in Purple Out at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators had five players in double digits in scoring led by
Warren Jackson's 19 points off the bench.
Besides Jackson's 19 points,
Coley Apsay chipped in 14 points for the Gators while
Nick Calcaterra and
Parker U'u each added 11 points for the victors.
AJ Kahlon recorded his sixth double-double of the season by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Gators was tied at 23-23 with 8:10 left in the opening period, when the hosts went on a 7-0 run capped by a
Derrick Brown three off one of
Coley Apsay's assists to give the victors a 30-23 lead. SFSU increased its lead to 38-29 on a three by
Parker U'u off one of
Nick Calcaterra's four assists. Two free throws by Jordan Ogundiran cut the Gator lead to 40-33 heading into the locker room at the half.
SFSU came out on fire in the second half as they built a 59-40 lead capped by a Calcaterra three off another assist from Apsay with 9:04 left in the game. Cal Poly Pomona (2-4, 0-2 CCAA) cut the hosts' lead to 70-60 on a three by Mason Dickerson with just 2:34 on the clock.
San Francisco State finished the game outscoring its opponents 9-3 including a three by
Ryne Williams to give the Gators the 79-63 victory. The Gators will return to the court tomorrow evening at 7:30pm, when they battle Cal State East Bay (7-1, 1-0 CCAA) in another CCAA showdown. The Pioneers defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 95-74 this evening in Seaside, Calif.
GAME NOTES
GATORS: San Francisco State improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2008-09. The Gators are now 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA. They are the only CCAA that have an undefeated overall record.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: 'Our guys competed for 40 minutes this evening and we told them how well we did would be dictated on how we handled Cal Poly Pomona's runs," said SFSU head coach
Paul Trevor. "Our three guards (
Coley Apsay,
Nick Calcaterra and
Warren Jackson) gave us phenomenal output this evening," added Trevor. "We also defended really well this evening as most of their baskets came on our turnovers. It was nice to have five guys in double digits, which gave us a nice balanced effort."
NUMBER 50: With their win this evening, the Gators are 50-24 at home during Coach Trevor's previous six years on the sidelines. San Francisco State has only one losing record at home (5-6 during 2011-12). The Gators went 10-2 during the 2012-13 season.
22-3: Since the beginning of the 2015-16 season, the Gators are 22-3 in games that they have scored at least 70 points including going a perfect 6-0 this season. Their 61-50 win at Notre Dame de Namur this past Saturday was their first win scoring under 70 points since a 59-47 win over Stanislaus State on Feb. 20, 2015.
NUMBER SIX: AJ Kahlon recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds this evening.
ONLY ONE MISS: The Gators went 29-for-30 from the charity stripe this evening. They are now shooting 82.4% from the line for the season.
Warren Jackson went 12-for-12 from the line while
AJ Kahlon was six-for-six.
Coley Apsay and
Chiefy Ugbaja each went four-for-four and
Parker U'u was two-for two.
SNAPPED THAT STREAK: The Gators snapped their seven-game losing streak to the Broncos this evening with a 79-63 win. The last time the Gators defeated Cal Poly Pomona was a 57-55 win on February 22, 2013 at the Swamp.
13 STEALS: San Francisco State recorded 13 steals while forced 20 turnovers this evening.

BACK HOME TOMORROW: The Gators will return home tomorrow evening when they host Cal State East Bay, who is 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA after their win at Cal State Monterey Bay this evening.
