SAN FRANCISCO – Playing in their final match of the inaugural D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team came out firing away from all areas on the court. In the end, the Gators could not slow down the attack from visiting Concordia, who took the set 3-0 winning 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.
San Francisco State (1-7) hit .342 as a team, throwing down 35 kills on 73 attempts with 10 errors. Five players hit over .250 on the afternoon with
Lauren Williams scoring the ball, hitting a blistering .571. Williams and outside hitter
Christine Johnson led SF State with nine kills apiece. Johnson finished the day hitting .262 with nine kills on 19 swings.
Setter
Linda Aerne ran the Gators attack, she tallied 29 assists with a pair of digs. Under Aerne's guidance, SF State had five players record at least one kill.
Haley Halpert and
Abby Griffith both collected seven kills on the day. Griffith hit .600, tallying seven kills on 10 attempts with one error.
The Gators woes today were on the defensive side of the ball. SF State recorded only two blocks, and 21 total digs. This allowed Concordia (4-4) to hit .481 as a team with five players hitting over .350.
In the opening frame, the Gators battled the Cavaliers to a 10-10 draw following a kill by Williams. From there Concordia took advantage, going on a 15-7 run to take the set 25-17. CU hit .565 in the set, tallying 15 kills on 23 swings. The Gators responded hitting .233, their lowest of the match.
In the second and third set the Gators battled, hitting .488 with 22 kills and just four errors. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers responded with a 31 kills of their own during that stretch and also tallied 11 service aces.
The Gators will return to action next Saturday when they host CCAA rival Sonoma State on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Gym at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
