VB | Gators fall at second-place Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team fell in straights sets (25-13, 28-26, 25-11) on Saturday night at Cal State East Bay.

The Pioneers (11-5/5-3 CCAA), who are second in the CCAA North Division, used a three-point run in set one to grow a one-point lead into four. SF State (6-11/2-7 CCAA) called timeout but that didn't slow the Pioneers, who extended the run to nine straight to take a 17-7 lead. The hole was too great to recover from and the Gators trailed 1-0 early.

SF State led by four in set two but leading 18-15, saw the lead evaporate after a 6-0 Pioneers run. The Gators had to fight to pull even, which they did at 23-23 thanks to a pair of Brenna Dougherty kills, a Bailey Johnson kill, and a Pioneers attack error. SF State fended off set point three times but back-to-back Gators attack errors gave Cal State East Bay the 2-0 lead.

The Gators, who hit just .027 in the match to the Pioneer's .248, ran out of steam in set three and the Pioneers cruised to the straight-set win to move to 7-0 at home this season.

Bailey Johnson tallied a team-high 11 kills. Drew Morris added seven and Dougherty recorded six kills. Drew Morris and Vanessa Ditz each had 14 digs and it marked a season-high for Ditz. Jocelyn Rodriguez had 12 digs and Dougherty recorded 10.

Cal State East Bay was led by Deja Thompson's 14 kills. Brandi Brucato was one of three Pioneers in double digit digs and led her team with 14.

Next up for the SF State is a trip to Chico State (8-10/2-6 CCAA) on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
