VB | Gators season ends with sweep by first-place Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-12) at first-place Sonoma State on Saturday night in CCAA action.

"There's a reason why Sonoma State is the seventh-best team in the region. They're a really good team and they made great plays tonight," said Head Coach Matt Hoffman. "I liked our fight in the second set. We had a lead a good distance into that set but they made a few more extra plays down the stretch. If we win that second set, the third set is obviously different."

Sonoma State (20-7/14-4 CCAA), who sits atop the CCAA North Division, began the match 4-0 and later used a 6-0 run that gave the Seawolves a 13-5 advantage. SF State hit just .028 in the first set, though that number improved significantly over the next two sets. The Gators finished hitting .121 for the match and gave their best fight in the second set, where the Gators battled to 21-21 before the Seawolves scored the final four points of the set. In set three, the Gators simply couldn't slow the Seawolves attack, which posted a .593 hitting percentage in the final set.

Bailey Johnson and Drew Morris each had eight kills apiece for the Gators, and Morris had eight digs. Freshman setter Cassandra Fong recorded a double-double with her 24 assists and team-high 10 digs.

Kelsey McIntire and Caiti Wiesner led the Seawolves with 10 kills apiece and Calan Seitz added nine in the win. Megan Bohorquez led all players with 15 digs.

"On the season as a whole, it's a process. We took a big step this year relative to last year, finishing higher than we were projected to finish," said Hoffman. "I'm really excited about the progress our program made this year and we'll get into in the spring and take the next step, and hopefully that will catapult us into the next step in the fall."

The Gators finish with an 8-18 mark and went 4-14 in CCAA play, fifth of seven teams in the CCAA North Division.
