SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team had its Senior Night spoiled on Saturday by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 28-26) loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Otters (12-12/6-10 CCAA) punched their ticket to the CCAA Volleyball Championships while also ending any chances of a postseason appearance by the Gators (7-17/3-13 CCAA), who needed to beat the Otters to split the season series and keep their playoff hopes alive.
"They made a couple of extra plays in the second and third sets. When you hit .296 with 17 kills in the third and they get 22, they just did a little bit more," said Head Coach
Matt Hoffman. "We had our chances. We had a couple of swings and I loved our fight. We were just a couple of plays short."
SF State jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the match but a 6-1 Otters run gave them an 8-7 advantage. The Gators' lone senior, Christine Johnson, answered with a kill tied to tie at 9-9 but but back-to-back kills from Anela Visesio made it 11-9 and the Otters finished the set on a 7-1 run.
The two teams traded points in the second set. Tied 19-19, the Otters recorded three consecutive kills and took a 22-19 lead. The Gators scored on a Drew Morris kill and an Otters service error but a Maddy Underwood kill and an Otters service ace closed out set two.
CSUMB took a 6-1 lead in set two, though the Gators slowly chipped away. Another Christine Johnson kill sparked a 5-0 run that tied the set at 20-20. SF State held set point at 25-24 thanks to Amber Tygart attack error but Tygart recorded a successful kill on the next point to knot the set at 25-25. An Olivia Tabron kill gave the Gators set point yet again but a bad Gators set tied it at 26-26, and Underwood recorded back-to-back kills for the sweep.
The Otters hit .291 for the match, including a match-opening .480 in the first set. The Gators hit .296 in the third set but CSUMB hit nearly as well at .279. Visesio led all players with 16 kills, Underwood had 14, and Tygart had nine on the night. Ashlynee Armstrong led the Otters with 19 digs.
Drew Morris recorded a team-high 13 kills and Bailey Johnson added 12 in the loss. Vanessa Ditz recorded 18 digs, which matches the career-high that she set the night before. Bailey Johnson led all players with three blocks.
"Drew and Bailey played well tonight," said Hoffman. "They did a great job of carrying the load for us and Vanessa did well on defense."
The Gators finish out the home schedule on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. versus Humboldt State. That match, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, was postponed due to the North Bay fires. The Gators' final match of 2017 will come on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at Sonoma State. Live video and stats for Sunday's match will be available at
