MBB | No. 13 Gators' eight-game win streak snapped

POMONA, Calif. — The No. 13-ranked San Francisco State men's basketball team saw its eight-game win streak snapped on Thursday with a 65-59 loss at Cal Poly Pomona.

With UC San Diego (22-5/17-3 CCAA) beating Cal State San Bernardino (11-13/7-12 CCAA), SF State (22-4/15-4 CCAA) will have to settle for no better than second place in the CCAA.

The Gators, who entered the week with their highest ranking in the NABC Division II national poll, were held to 37.5 percent (18-of-48) shooting. To compound matters, the Gators were outworked on the glass 36-28.

SF State jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first three minutes but the Broncos (11-12/9-10 CCAA) used an eight-point run to even the score at 16-16. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half. The Gators looked poised to enter the locker room with a lead but Chiefy Ugbaja's foul of Jeremy Dennis led to three free throws and the Gators instead trailed 31-29. Warren Jackson scored a pair of free throws to start the second half and the two teams continued to trade points. Justin Young's dunk followed by a three-pointer by Riley Schaefer gave the Broncos a 40-36 advantage and the deficit grew to as large as 10 with 6:53 to go. AJ Kahlon's three-point play, a trio of Jackson free throws, and a Coley Apsay three-pointer pulled the Gators within two with 2:23 to go. SF State got a stop and had a chance for the tie but couldn't get the first or second chance to fall. The Gators caught another break when Schaefer was whistled for an offensive foul but missed their next two shots while Cal Poly Pomona pulled away with two sets of free throws.

Jackson led all players with 13 points and had a six rebounds and six assists, both team-highs. Apsay scored 12 points and Calcaterra scored 10 points but the two guards both went just 3-of-11 from the field. AJ Kahlon added 11 points, five rebounds, and a block.

The Broncos were led by Chris Sullivan and Dennis, who had 11 points apiece.
