SAN FRANCISCO — Freshman
Brenna Dougherty's career-high 18 kills powered the San Francisco State volleyball team in a 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 16-14) nailbiter over Stanislaus State at home on Friday night.
The freshman outside hitter came up when it mattered most. The Gators (5-8/1-4 CCAA) dropped the first set and took the next two sets to grab a 2-1 lead. The Warriors (0-13/0-5 CCAA) rallied back themselves and forced a fifth and decisive set. The Gators made five errors early and found themselves trailing 7-4. SF State Head Coach
Matt Hoffman called two timeouts and the Gators finally picked things up. Facing match point at 14-10, the Gators cut the lead to two thanks to a Warriors attack error and a
Lauren Williams block. Stanislaus State called timeout and Dougherty came through with back-to-back kills to knot the match at 14-14.
Bailey Johnson's service ace gave the Gators match point and Dougherty made the final kill, eclipsing her previous career-high of 17.
"When I called that first timeout, it was only 7-4 and we had given them five or six of those. I called another timeout and it was 10-7," said Hoffman. "I knew if we just started playing better, cleaner, consistent volleyball with aa few less errors that we could inch our way into it. I just didn't know it would take until the very end."
Dougherty made it a double-double with her 14 digs. Johnson also tallied a career-high 17 kills. Junior setter
Eden Fukushima also set a new career-high with 54 assists. Freshman libero
Jocelyn Rodriguez was one of four Gators in double digit digs and led all players with 28. Freshman
Drew Morris, who made her return to the court for the first time since being sidelined on Sept. 8, tallied four kills and 12 digs. Williams added 13 kills and
Christine Johnson had 10.
The Warriors were led by Rachel Klopfer's 14 kills. Sierra Adams added 11 in the loss.
