LOS ANGELES — Seniors powered the San Francisco State men's basketball team to a 90-82 victory over Cal State LA on Saturday night at University Gym as the Gators won their fifth consecutive contest over the Golden Eagles.
Combined with Friday's win at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Gators (10-7/7-5 CCAA), now in sole possession of fifth place in the CCAA, did something that a Gators squad hadn't done since 2004-05: beat both the Toros and Golden Eagles on the road.
SF State's seniors led the charge.
Warren Jackson led all players with a season-high 27 points and four assists,
Brantley Bynum matched a career-high 22 points and finished with a team-high nine rebounds, and
Evan Zeller added 17 points and was 9-of-9 at the free throw line.
"I am really proud of our ability to battle through a lot of adversity to come up with a road sweep," said Head Coach
Vince Inglima. "Warren really stepped up every time Cal State LA made a run at us. He made big plays over and over."
The Gators persevered despite foul trouble that resulted in three SF State players fouling out. Both of the Gators' seven-footers,
Ryne Williams and
Tyler Jackson, plus Bynum, fouled out. Williams finished his night with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and was 3-of-3 from deep.
Chiefy Ugbaja, who's averaging 26.7 minutes per game, found his time limited to 17 minutes after three first-half fouls.
The Gators trailed most of the fist half and by as much as seven but went on an 8-1 run over the final two minutes of the half to grab a 37-35 halftime lead. SF State took control in the second half with a 10-0 run over two minutes and soon had its largest lead of the night, 55-43, thanks to
Donavon Taylor's elbow jumper with 15:47 on the clock. The Golden Eagles (7-10/3-9 CCAA) responded with an 11-0 run of their own and tied the game a couple of minutes later at 60-60 on Jihad Woods' jumper.
Warren Jackson's tough layup kept SF State ahead and kicked off a 13-4 Gators run but CSULA answered yet again with a 12-5 run that made it 78-76 with 3:36 to go. A Bynum offensive rebound led to a pair of free throws that maintained a two-possession lead and the Gators outscored CSULA 12-6 over the final three minutes, including 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
"We didn't handle their pressure early but once we settled down, we were able to take advantage of the openings," added Inglima. "Brantley was great around the rim today."
Woods led the Golden Eagles with 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Garrett Carter added 18 points on four three-pointers, Elliott Smith scored 14 points, and Devin Means scored 13 points in the loss. Kenneth Cyprian added a dozen points before fouling out in the final thirty seconds.
