MBB | Zeller's career-high leads Gators in non-conference tilt at Holy Names

Gators win streak reaches six

OAKLAND, Calif. — Evan Zeller's sharpshooting powered the San Francisco State men's basketball team to a 77-69 non-conference victory at Holy Names on Tuesday in Tobin Gym.

"Other than the first five minutes and the last five minutes, I thought we played a tremendous game. Sometimes that happens when you play a midweek game," said Head Coach Vince Inglima. "The rebounding effort was great but the big story was some guys stepped up. Evan was really effective and Brantley continues his tear."

The Gators scored the first four points before they fell behind 13-7. SF State responded with a 14-2 run that gave the Gators a 21-15 lead with eight minutes to go in the half.

SF State carried a 29-25 lead into the second half and pushed the lead to 10 on Brantley Bynum's layup with just under 13 minutes to go in the second half. The lead dwindled to four before a Zeller three with just over eight minutes to pushed the lead back to double digits.

Zeller poured in 27 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep, for a new career best. Bynum, who was named CCAA Player of the Week earlier in the day, followed up a career performance with 24 points, a team-high seven rebounds, two steals, and a pair of assists. Michael Diaz scored eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and the Gators bench combined for 34 points in the victory.

"We were dealing with some injuries so it's huge to have a deep bench. A guy like Niquis Garland, who rarely sees the floor, comes to practice and works his butt off every single day," added Inglima. "So when we're down two point guards, it's a testament to his character to be able to step into that role and I'm really proud of him."

Jacob Dean scored a team-high 15 points for the Hawks, followed by 11 points from Marcelas Perry, and 10 points apiece from Zachary Young and Jewels Sanders.
