POMONA, Calif. - The San Francisco State volleyball team dropped its road trip finale on Saturday to No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1. The match score was 25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 25-16.
- Drew Morris dropped in 17 kills and 20 digs for her eighth double-double of the 2018 campaign and hit .275. Jessica Haynie recorded 13 kills.
- Payton Jensen poured in 44 assists and ten digs and Olivia Tabron had 11 kills. Vanessa Ditz had 20 digs, which is tied-for-the second-most logged this year for the senior.
- Cal Poly (19-3/12-2 CCAA) hit .347 on the night, which is the second-highest percentage allowed by SF State (10-11/5-9 CCAA) this year.
After a 5-0 run by Cal Poly Pomona to start the contest, SF State cut it to one at 7-6 after a block by Tabron and Marlena Billings. The Gators would later tie it at 10-all on a service ace by Maura Donovan, however the Broncos would later take a 16-14 lead. Cal Poly would maintain a consistent four-point lead throughout the set as they took set point with a 24-20 advantage. Morris kept the Gators alive with a swing to the back line and Bailey Johnson followed with a block, but Jenna Goldsberry had a kill to get the first set win.
The Gators stormed to a 6-1 advantage in the second as Johnson, Haynie and Billings all got kills and Jensen dropped in a pair of service aces. The Broncos tied it at 8-all, but the Purple and Gold went ahead 11-8 as Tabron had a big swing from the net off a dish from Jensen. The back-and-forth continued as the Gators pulled ahead 20-18 on another Morris kill and a Bronco service error gave SF State set point. The hosts tied it up 24-24 on an ace, but Morris continued to roll with another kill and Ditz dropped in an ace of her own to seal the win and tie things up.
The Broncos bounced back with a 6-2 advantage in the third before Haynie had a swing from the side of the net to end the run. Cal Poly Pomona pulled ahead 11-6 and then rolled to a 14-9 lead following another Goldsberry kill. The hosts then got their largest lead of the frame at nine, 20-11, and quickly took set point at 24-14. A Bronco service error and ace by Johnson brought the Purple and Gold closer, but a block closed out the set with a 25-16 Bronco win.
Another Haynie point tied it up 5-5 as SF State looked to tie the match up once again. She would team up with Billings on a block to knot the score, 9-9, but the Broncos got three-quick points to regain the lead. Cal Poly then widened their advantage to 20-12 as they continued to close out the match and take match point at 24-15. Haynie kept it going with her 13th swing of the evening, but Desi Martin ended the night with a kill to seal the win.
SF State returns home on Tuesday to take on Stanislaus State in a key CCAA matchup as the Gators look to make a postseason push. Match time is 7 p.m., and live stats and a stream will be provided.
