SAN FRANCISCO — Trailing with 12 minutes to go, the San Francisco State men's basketball team finished on a 29-15 run to down Dominican 66-55 in the final game of the 2018 San Francisco State Tipoff Classic on Saturday night.
- Ryne Williams led all players with 16 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, and three steals, which were alll career highs.
- Jase Wickliffe added a career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
- Jordan Balser finished with seven points, all of which came down the stretch
- The Penguins went 8-of-23 from the three-point line but were pushed beyond comfort down the stretch and made just one of their last 11 from deep.
- Dominican was led by Cedric Thomas and Ezra Talbert, who scored 14 points apiece.
- The Gators led the final nine minutes.
San Francisco State jumped out to a seven point lead early. Dominican used a 12-4 run to take a five-point lead with five to go in the first half but back-to-back three pointers from Williams and Wickliffe gave the Gators a 24-23 lead. San Francisco State held onto a 29-28 lead at the half.
San Francisco State fired off seven quick points in the second half but but the Penguins closed the gap with an 11-0 run and took the lead, 40-37, after a Talbert three-pointer and a Thomas layup.
Jiday Ugbaja stopped the bleeding with a layup and Williams hit a three to make it 42-40. With six minutes remaining, Balser gave the Gators a boost with five quick points that extended the lead to eight, though the Penguins pulled back to within three before San Francisco State pulled away late.
The Gators will head to Sonoma State for the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic next weekend, November 16 and 17, where they'll take on Notre Dame de Namur and Concordia (Calif.).
