SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team flipped the calendar to 2019 and got back in the win column on Friday with a pair of home wins, a 25-18 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead and a 30-12 victory over No. 23 Colorado Mesa.
The Gators led wire-to-wire in both contests. SF State first faced off with the MSUM Dragons, who also fell 23-12 to CMU earlier in the day.
Brandon Vu began the day by knocking off nationally-ranked Cole Jones in a narrow 4-3 decision.
Jordan Gurrola built the lead with a pair of takedowns that resulted in a two point near fall and a four point near fall.
Romeo Medina-Ontiveros and
Maxamillian Schneider grew the lead to 19-11 with back-to-back pins. At 184 pounds,
Justin Pichedwatana grew the lead to 22-14 and
Andrew Herrera, who wrestled at 197 pounds, secured the team victory with a 6-3 decision.
In an important RMAC matchup versus the nationally-ranked Mavericks, Vu and Gurrola again got the Gators off to a strong start. Gurrola recorded a pin in just 48 seconds and
Isiah Alva also recorded a pin at 149 pounds that grew the lead to 15-6. No. 6 Payton Tawater was forced to forfeit due to injury and the Gators recorded decisions at 184 and 197 pounds to secure the win.
Head Coach Jason Welch: "Today was a really good turning point in the season. It was tough early with some people out and tough D1 competition so it's good to be in conference now and have our first real home match. It was nice to see a lot of fans and local wrestlers come out show their support."
The Golden Gators are right back at it on Saturday, January 5 at the Menlo Open. Action begins at 9 a.m. with live stats and video provided by the Oaks.
