TURLOCK, Calif. - The San Francisco State volleyball team dropped its Tuesday night contest to host Stanislaus State, 3-1 (25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20)
- SF State (10-4/3-2 CCAA), who ranks sixth nationally in hitting percentage heading into tonight, hit .459 in the first with 20 kills but struggled in the second with a .088 hitting percentage. The .169 mark for the match is the second lowest for the Gators this year.
- The 14 blocks by Stanislaus State (8-4/3-2 CCAA) are the most by a Gator opponent this season.
- Drew Morris recorded 20 kills and 14 digs four her fourth double-double of the year and second-straight 20+ kill performance. Bailey Johnson added ten kills and hit .409 on 22 attempts and added a season-high six total blocks.
- Payton Jensen handed out 34 assists with 13 digs for her second double-double of the year and Cassandra Fong added five assists.
A Morris kill from the left off the tip off the Warrior blocker sparked a 7-0 run as SF State went up 9-6. In that run Morris had three kills and Taylor Garcia notched a pair of aces for the early lead. Jensen, who was named the CCAA Player of the Week earlier today, teamed up with Johnson for block that put SF State up 13-9. Two aces by the hosts cut it to one before another Morris swing, her fifth of the match, followed by Jessica Haynie's first point of the night put the Gators up 15-13. The Warriors were able to tie it at 16-all on three consecutive kills, and at 17-17, Morris regained the lead with kill off the diving Warrior off an assist from Brenna Dougherty. Johnson made it a 22-20 lead with back-to-back points off assist from Jensen, but Stanislaus was able to keep within striking distance and tied it up, 22-all. The Warriors got kills from Sierra Adams and Rachel Klopfer to go up 24-23 but Haynie came up big with a swing that dropped inside the sideline to level the score. Three consecutive booming swings from Morris won the first game, 27-25 for SF State, giving the junior ten total in the first set.
Stanislaus pulled ahead 6-2 in the second. Their lead was push to 8-3 before Johnson cut it to four with another kill. Out of the timeout, Haynie recorded another kill and Jensen followed with an ace that made it 11-6. Barr sparked a 4-0 run that narrowed the deficit to two, 14-12. Three Warrior errors put the Gators up 16-15, but a 7-0 run regained the host lead as they looked to level the match. SF State would cut it to five, but Jordon Wilson completed the victory for the Warriors with her eighth kill of the contest for the 25-19 win.
Sophie Anderson's ace tied it up 7-7 in the third. Stanislaus benefited from a 5-0 run that pushed their lead to 14-10. Two more kills by Morris and an attack error cut it to three, 17-14, and the junior would spark a run where SF State would score three of the next four as they cut it to two, 19-17, and force a Warrior timeout. Haynie tied it up 20-20 with consecutive kills, the latter nipping the line as she went across the court. The hosts would bounce back after the timeout to take a 2-1 lead capped off with a block by Wilson and Adams as they took set three, 25-23.
The Warriors stormed to a 5-0 lead in the fourth but a series of errors and kills by Morris and Johnson tied it up. Stanislaus got more big plays by Adams and Wilson as they now lead 15-9, and the run continued as they scored six of seven to lead 17-11. Haynie added an ace to spark a surge with Johnson teaming up with Morris and Barr with blocks that cut it to 18-15, and Morris made it a two-point contest at 20-18 as she reached the 20-kill plateau. The hosts wrapped up the match with three quick kills as they completed the comeback, 25-20.
The Gators continued the road trip as they take on Cal State East Bay this Saturday at 7 p.m. Live stats and a stream will be provided.
