HAYWARD, Calif. — The San Francisco State volleyball team fell in four sets at Cal State East Bay, 3-1 (25-15, 16-25, 25-22, 25-21), on Saturday night.
- Errors proved costly for SF State (10-5/3-3 CCAA). The Gators recorded 21 attack errors, 10 service errors, and four reception errors.
- Drew Morris led all players with 16 kills, followed by a dozen from Jessica Haynie.
- The Pioneers (2-12/1-5 CCAA) snapped a seven-match losing streak.
The Gators had no answer for the Pioneers' quick start and fell behind 11-3. The deficit grew to as large as a dozen before the Gators dropped the first set 25-15.
Drew Morris recorded a kill and back-to-back service aces to spark a five-point Gators run and an 11-5 lead. Another four-point run pushed the lead to nine and a Haynie kill gave the GAtors the set, 25-16.
Three consecutive Gator points gave SF State a 6-4 lead. With the Gators up one, the Pioneers rallied for six consecutive points to take a 14-11 lead. The Gators countered with a five-point run that tied the set 21-21 but that hard work was quickly squandered by consecutive Gators errors. Morris cut the Pioneers lead to one with another kill but Jasmyne Love placed a kill and Eliza Cannon blocked an SF State attack to end the set, 25-22.
Morris gave the Gators the first point of the set but the Pioneers rattled off five quick points and the Gators never recovered. SF State pulled to within a point but couldn't even the set. Down seven, they made a late run and cut the lead to 24-21 but Samantha Zimmerman's kill earned match point.
The Gators play the third in a stretch of four road matches on Thursday, October 10 when they head to Sonoma State for a 7 p.m. match.
