VB | Gators Topped by No. 25 Golden Eagles

Los Angeles - Despite a strong start, the San Francisco State volleyball team fell to the No. 25 Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles, 3-2 (20-25, 14-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-10).

  • SF State (16-9/9-7 CCAA) posted a big second set as they hit .667 with 14 kills and no errors with five aces. 
  • Drew Morris led the way with 17 kills and 15 digs, her second-straight double-double and third in the last four matches. 
  • Senior Bailey Johnson, who is currently in the top ten in Gator history for hitting percentage in a season and is eyeing to do the same in career hitting percentage, hit .406 with 15 kills. 
  • Taylor Garcia added 11 digs to give her 394 on the year, the ninth most in program history. Jade Gillespie had 12 digs, one shy of tying her season best. Payton Jensen handed out 41 assists.

Set One

Two kills by Johnson and an ace by Jessica Haynie put SF State up early, 3-1. Both teams traded points as we were tied, 11-11, until a Golden Eagle (17-7/ 13-3 CCAA) error put the Gators up one. The hosts would go up, 15-14, until Haynie and Johnson went back-to-back kill and Johnson and Jensen teamed up for a block for the two-points advantage. The Gators would go up 20-17 following another Johnson block and an Los Angeles error continued the four-point run. The Golden Eagles bounced back to cut it to three after the break, but SF State was able to close it out following a pair of Los Angeles attack errors for the 25-20 win.

Set Two

Gillespie's first kill of the night put the Gators up 6-5. Town 10-9, Johnson's seventh of the night followed by a Haynie regained the one-point lead. Another Johnson kill and Haynie ace capped off a 6-0 run and made it a 14-10 SF State lead. The Gators continued to roll with a kill by Morris down the line and two aces by Brenna Dougherty widened the lead to 18-11. Trinity Barr registered a booming kill as SF State reached the 20-point plateau, and Morris made it 21-12. Johnson sealed the win with a bloop kill in front of the diving Los Angeles player as SF State went ahead 2-0 in the match.

Set Three

Tied, six-all, Haynie and Johnson's block put the Purple and Gold up one. The hosts went on a 4-0 run as they took their largest lead of the night thus far, 11-8, until Haynie recorded her fourth of the match to bring it back to two. A 3-0 run, with Jessica Kaeka dropping in the ace, put Los Angeles up 17-12, and two more out of the timeout made it a seven-point game. The Gators kept it close, but the Golden Eagles found their rhythm and Alejandra Negron forced a fourth with a 25-21 victory.

Set Four

Haynie put the Gators on the board in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to go up, 10-8. That lead was pushed to 15-12, with Morris ended the run off an assist from Jensen. Marlena Billings' solo block followed by Morris' tenth swing leveled the score, 15-15. Morris continued her strong frame with consecutive kills from the left as SF State now led, 17-16. Another 4-0 run by Los Angeles made it 21-18 as they eyed a fifth set. The Gators cut it to one yet again on a block by Gillespie and Johnson, and an attack error tied it up, 23-23. With the score 25-25, the hosts got swings by Julia Acevedo and Mickayla Sherman as they forced a fifth.

Set Five

A 3-0 run put the Golden Eagles up, 5-3, before Barr and Gillespie posted a big block. Barr's booming sixth kills brought SF State closer as they only trailed 9-6. Los Angeles  was bale to close it out on a 4-2 run as they completed the comeback.
