NEW ORLEANS - A total of eight student-athletes from the No. 5 San Francisco State women's track & field team have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2019 NCAA Division II All-Region team, the organization announced today.
It is the third-straight year the Gators have put five or more members on the indoor All-Region team, and the eight honorees are the most since the 2012 season.
This is the third indoor season Timarya Baynard has taken home the award in the 400m and 4x400. The senior helped the Gators secure three of the top five times in the 4x400 this year, including the second-fastest time ever in Division II. Joining Baynard in the record-breaking 4x400 is Alexis Henry, Monisha Lewis and Jazmine Smith, and SF State has earned the award in the event for three consecutive years.
Henry also earns All-Region honors in the 200m and 400m after setting program records in both events this season. Lewis' top time in the 60m hurdles earns her the award, and she broke the program record again this past weekend at the USATF Indoor Championships where she ran a 8.15, which is the fifth-fastest time all-time in Division II. In addition to the 60m hurdles and the 4x400, she adds the 200m to her trophy case as well.
This is the second-straight year Smith has earned the award in the 4x400 and the 400m, and her time of 24.33, which is the third-best mark in Gator history, earns her the All-Region award in the 200m.
Bianca Bryant takes home her first All-Region plaudit after she ran a top time in the 800m of 2:11.62, which is a program record. Devanique Brown's 3,609-point performance in the pentathlon earlier this season is the 15th-most points accrued in the nation, giving her her first career All-Region award. She also earns the recognition in triple jump, giving SF State its first honoree in the event since 2012.
Representing the throwers are Destiny Mack-Talalemotu and Courtney Massengale, and the duo earns the award in shot put. Mack-Talalemotu's 19.07m in weight throw, which is the ninth-best throw in the country gives her the award in two events for the second consecutive year.
The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the regions' top-3 relay teams. The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West – match those used during the cross country season.
The Gators wrap up the indoor season at the NCAA Indoor National Championships on March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
