SAN FRANCISCO — Mike Fanelli created his eponymous scholarship in 2018 to support the men's cross country program at San Francisco State.
With the return of the men's track & field program, the scholarship will now benefit both programs. The scholarship will be awarded to a runner with financial need who demonstrates leadership on the team and provides an example to his fellow teammates. Donations from Mr. Fanelli, his fellow runners, and friends have created the endowment that will now exists in perpetuity to support San Francisco State student-athletes in the men's cross country and track teams.
In 1981, Fanelli set the program record in the 10,000m. He went on to coach the USA National Team three times, coached 14 US Olympic Trials Qualifiers, and one national champion. He served as the USATF National Cross Country Chairman from 1992-94. Fanelli was inducted into the San Francisco State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011. The Mike Fanelli Track Classic is also named after him.
