SB | Gators Down Simon Fraser, Split Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, California - The San Francisco State began the Tournament of Champions on Friday, kicking off the day with an 11-4 win against Simon Fraser before falling to No. 5 Concordia-Irvine, 7-1.

By the Numbers

  • SF State (19-12) erased a three-run deficit to defeat Simon Fraser for their seventh double-digit scoring performance of the season. The victory is also their fourth straight and their ninth in their last 12 games.
  • Brylynn Vallejos knocked in three runs in the first contest and how has four-straight contests of three RBI and six multi-RBI contests this season. Michelle Castro went 3-for-4, her fifth three-hit performance of the year.
  • Katelyn Sturm and Sydney Jenkins each plated a pair of runs in the game one.
  • Vallejos knocked in the lone run in game two.

How They Scored
  • Simon Fraser (6-15) got three in the first, capped off by Courtney DeAdder's two-run double to right-center.
  • In the third, Samantha Alvarez singled to the hole in short and Jenkins reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, advancing Alvarez to third. Vallejos knocked a two-rub double to left, giving her four-straight multi-RBI contests. The freshman stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to tie things up, 3-3.
  • SF State took the lead in the fourth as Lehua DeLeon and Alvarez walked with one down. The duo pulled a double steal, and DeLeon then scored on a fielding error by the third baseman for the 4-3 lead.
  • SFU answered in the bottom half to tie it up once again after a Gator throwing error.
  • The Gators put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the fifth to regain the lead. Andrea Hildan singled up the middle and was replaced by pinch runner Triniti Scruggs. Castro had an infield single to advance Scruggs to bring up Nina Revoir, who reached on a fielder's choice but an errant throw by the short stop allowed Scruggs to reach third. Sturm singled to left to plate Castro and Scruggs for the lead, and Hayley Nunes advanced the duo on a sacrifice bunt. DeLeon walked to load the bases, and pinch hitter Katie Rohrer scored pinch runner Latrice Thompson on a sac fly to right. Next batter Jenkins scored DeLeon and Sturm on a double to left that put SF State up five.
  • Two more insurance runs came across in the seventh to make it 11-4. Sturm led off with an infield single and Nunes hit a base hit to center. DeLeon beat out a bunt single to load the bases and Alvarez singled up the middle to score Sturm for the first run. With one down Vallejos hit a sac fly to left to plate DeLeon for the seven-run lead.

  • Karla Soto toed the rubber in game one, going the distance to improve to 9-1 on the year.
GAME TWO

How They Scored
  • The Eagles got an RBI double by Mackenzie Graham to take a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Graham hit a three-run home run to left in the third to widen the lead to 4-0.
  • In the fifth, DeLeon singled up the middle and Jenkins walked. Vallejos blooped a single to shallow left to score DeLeon and make it 4-1.
  • Concordia scored again in the bottom half on Graham's fifth RBI of the game, a single to left, to regain the four-run lead.
  • A pair of insurance runs scored in the sixth to make it 7-1, both with two outs.

  • Emily Mitchell threw all six with a pair of strikeouts. SF State tagged Eagle All-American hurler Callie Nunes for four hits, which is tied for the second-most allowed by the pitcher this season.
