SB | Jacques’ Home Run Lifts Gators Over Sharks in Saturday Split

TURLOCK, California - A pinch-hit home run off the bat of Tianna Jacques helped the San Francisco State softball team defeat the Hawaii-i-Pacific Sharks, 7-3, in game two on Saturday in the Tournament of Champions. SF State dropped it's first game of the day to Western Oregon by a final score of 4-2.

By the Numbers

  • SF State (20-13) was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Catcher Sydney Jenkins threw out another runner to bring her total to a CCAA-leading 14.
  • Michelle Castro, Katelyn Sturm, Hayley Nunes and Samantha Alvarez each got hits in game one.
  • Five different players each got multiple hits in game two, with Castro going 3-for-four with a run scored to extend her hitting streak to six straight. Nunes scored a pair of runs while Jacques hit in a season-high three.
  • The win puts SF State in the 20-win plateau for the fourth-straight season.
  • The 15 hits are the third-most recorded in a game this season.

How They Scored
  • SF State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, with Andrea Hildan walking with one down. Castro hit an infield single to short, and Nina Revoir reached on a fielder's choice that got Castro out and advanced Hildan to third. Revoir then stole second and while getting in a rundown to allow HIldan to score for the first run. Next batter  Sturm reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, who kicked the ball near first and Revoir scored all the way from second for the 2-0 advantage.
  • The Wolves (16-9) got on the board in the third after Cheyanne Rimer's RBI single to left.
  • A pair of Gator errors prolonged the fourth as Western Oregon took 4-2 lead, starting with a Kennedy Coy RBI double to left.

  • Karla Soto went all seven with just two earned and four strikeouts.

How They Scored
  • In the third, Brylynn Vallejos led off with a single up the middle and Hildan sacrificed her over. Next batter Castro singled to the hole at short and an errant throw by the shortstop allowed Castro to move to second and for Vallejos to score, putting the Gators on the board.
  • In the fourth, Nunes ripped a triple to left center and DeLeon singled to the hole at short, but Nunes had to hold. With Alvarez up, Nunes took a daring lead and the Shark catcher threw down to third for the pickoff attempt, but the ball ricocheted off her helmet and bounced into left allowing her to score.
  • Cieana Curran doubled home Brandi Leong in the top of the fifth to put Hawaii-Pacific (26-18) on the board, and Tiana Cantero-Kawelo followed with a double to right to tie things up.
  • In the sixth, Hildan beat out a bunt single with two down and Castro singled to left. Pinch hitter Jacques came to the plate and knocked the 2-2 pitch over the fence in right to put the Gators up 5-2. Sturm kept the rally going with a double to left-center and Nunes singled to left to plate Sturm for the four-run lead. DeLeon walked and Alvarez struck out, but beat out the dropped third strike and Nunes worked her way home to cap off of the five-run frame.
  • The Sharks scored on the final play as Curran came around on Saunder's single ,who was then thrown out at second to end the game.

  • Emily Mitchell tossed all seven with three strikeouts, including two in the sixth to sit the Sharks down in order. She was efficient in the victory, only needing 81 pitches for the complete game.
