Box Score TURLOCK, California - The San Francisco State softball team couldn't stop a late comeback by the Dominican Penguins as they fell 6-5 in their Tournament of Champions finale.
The Gators wrapped up the tournament with a .355 batting average, which was the third-best mark of the 27 teams.
- The Gators (20-14) had 14 hits in the contest, which is tied for the fourth-most on the year, and recorded a hit in every inning.
- SF State's 199 runs, 85 stolen bases, and 162 RBI are already in the top-ten in program history.
- Brylynn Vallejos, Andrea Hildan, Triniti Scruggs and Sydney Jenkins each had two hits, with Scruggs recording her first career multi-hit game.
- In the second, Hayley Nunes doubled to left with one down and advanced to third on a passed ball. Lehua DeLeon plated her on a single to left for the first run. After a fielder's choice off the bat of Samantha Alvarez that forced DeLeon out at second, Jenkins knocked a base hit to center. Next batter Vallejos also singled to center, and advanced to second on the throw, to score Alvarez and Jenkins for the 3-0 lead. HIldan got her second hit in just as many innings on a single to left that plated Vallejos for the 4-0 lead.
- Another came across in the sixth with Scruggs singling to short, going to second after Celeste Adriano's walk, stealing third, and scoring on Kylee Brown's base hit to center for the 5-0 advantage.
- The Penguins (7-19) stormed back in the sixth with four runs, two of which came on a two-run single by Dahlen Dennis. Jenkins ended the inning with a nice line drive catch at third and doubled up the runner for the double play to end the bases-loaded jam.
- Dominican walked off in the seventh as they scored two for the comeback win. Lauren Persi singled home the winning run on a base hit to left-center.
- Karla Soto threw three innings in the start and allowed no earned runs on three hits before reentering in the sixth and closing out the game. Natalie Minteer came in in the fourth and struck out the first batter she saw while tossing 2.1 innings with three earned
SF State returns to Turlock, California next weekend to take on Stanislaus State in their final regular season road CCAA series of the season. Live stats will be provided.
