SB | Gators Clinch Postseason Berth on Milestone-Filled Friday

SAN FRANCISCO - For the first time since 2007, the San Francisco State softball team is CCAA Tournament bound after sweeping Cal State East Bay in a series-opening doubleheader. Both games were eight-inning comebacks, with game one resulting in a 2-1 win and game two ending 11-10.

By the Numbers

  • The game one win is the 800th in program history.
  • The red-hot Gators (35-16/23-13 CCAA) have won six straight and 15 of their last 16.
  • The Gators are 13-1 this season when scoring nine or more runs. They are also 5-2 in extras this season.
  • Brylynn Vallejos went 3-for-3, and her base hit in the third was her 84th of the year, setting a new program record for hits in a season, which was originally held by Vanessa Rodrigue in 2007. The Schutt
  • Sports/NFCA Player of the Year Top 25 honoree went 6-for-7 on the day to bring her season total to 88, which is in the top-three in the nation and tied for the tenth-most all time in CCAA history. 
  • Andrea Hildan and Lehua DeLeon each added a pair of hits in the opener. A pair of two-out RBI by Sydney Jenkins and Lehua DeLeon helped SF State come back in game one.
  • Katelyn Sturm had a career-high six RBI in game two, which is the most by a Gator since last season when Katie Rohrer knocked in six as well, and she had three hits. The freshman hit a clutch two-run shot to left in the eighth in game two for her fifth of the year, which is tied for the team lead.
  • The 23 CCAA wins are tied for the most ever in a season for the program. The Gators also set the program record for doubles in a season wiht 78.

How They Scored
  • It wasn't until the sixth that someone got on the board in the pitchers duel. Cal State East Bay's (12-25/8-26 CCAA) Sarah Fukushima hit a sac fly to right to score Courtney Leyba for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Gators started the comeback in the seventh, with DeLeon hitting a two-out single up the middle. Pinch hitter Tianna Jacques came up big as she knocked a base hit up the middle to move DeLeon into scoring position, and Jenkins hit the 3-2 pitch up the middle for another single which plated DeLeon to tie things up.
  • In the eighth, Michelle Castro led off with a walk and with two down, Hildan hit a single up the middle for her second hit of the day. DeLeon then doubled to right to score Castro as the Gators walked off with the win.

  • Emily Mitchell struck out the two batters she saw and tossed all eight innings allowing just one earned. It is the junior's 14th complete game this season.

How They Scored
  • The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the first after RBI by Maddie Ramirez and Meghan Araneta.
  • Vallejos led off the bottom half with a single to short and Hayley Nunes followed with a base hit up the middle. With two down, Sturm doubled to left to tie things up, 2-2.
  • In the second, Courtney Leyba hit an infield single to plate Jennifer Palmeres for the 3-2 lead.
  • The Gators once again answered with Jenkins reaching on a fielder's choice that scored DeLeon, who reached on a leadoff single.
  • A two-run double by Jackie Najera with two down in the third put the Pioneers up 5-3.
  • In the fourth, East Bay got a three-run shot to left off the bat of Ramirez to widen their lead to 8-3.
  • The comeback started in the fifth as Nina Revoir doubled with one down and Sturm followed with a base hit to center for the first run. Sturm stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, and Jacques plated her with a double to left to cut it to 8-5. DeLeon followed with a double of her own to right-center, narrowing the deficit to two, and Samantha Alvarez knocked a base hit to right which scored DeLeon and make it 8-7.
  • In the sixth, Nunes singled to left and Castro and Revoir walked to load the bases. Sturm then hit a fly to left that the Pioneer left fielder made a great diving catch in foul territory for the out but Nunes tagged on the play for the tying run. 
  • East Bay went ahead in the eighth after two bases loaded walks to make it 10-8.
  • Sturm came up big in the eighth as she hit a two-run shot to left to tie it up, 10-10. Jacques followed with a base hit to left and with two down, Alvarez  reached on an error by the pitcher that moved Jacques to third. Jenkins sent everyone home with a base hit to left as SF State completed the comeback.

    • Karla Soto got the start and Sam Drucker threw 2.1 in relief with no earned. Mitchell came in in the seventh and threw 1.2 innings for the win.
