NEW ORLEANS - Courtney Massengale of the No. 6 San Francisco State women's track & field team was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) West Region Field Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Tom Lyons was tabbed the West Region Women's Coach of the Year and Asaundra Dalton earned West Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors for her work with the Gator sprinters.
Massengale is ranked fourth nationally in discus with a 53.89m, which she tossed at the CCAA Championships en route to a first-place finish where she earned All-CCAA honors in the event for the fourth-consecutive season. The CCAA Field Athlete of the Meet is also ranked 26th nationally in javelin with a mark of 43.67m, which she recorded at the CCAA Championships to earn another gold medal. The senior is the second West Region Field Athlete of the Year winner in program history, joining Tina Wills who earned the award in 2014.
This is Lyons' second West Region Coach of the Year nod this season after he took home the plaudit during the indoor slate. Under Lyons' tutelage, the Gators maintained a top-ten ranking in seven of the last nine weeks this season including back-to-back weeks at No. 2 in the nation while also being one of the top teams in the West. Lyons was named the CCAA Coach of the Year after SF State won its second consecutive CCAA Championship earlier this month after another dominating performance.
In her first season as a coaching specialist, Dalton helped lead the Gators to conference titles in the 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100 and 4x400. SF State owns two of the top-five times in the country in both relays, as well as the sixth-fastest and fifth-fastest times, respectively, in the 200m and 400m that are owned by Alexis Henry. The SF State sprinters have tallied four automatic and nine provisional marks this season, and will have nine representatives in six different events in next week's NCAA Outdoor Championships.Â
The Gators look to make some noise at the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week in Kingsville, Texas as they wrap up the 2019 season.Â
