SAN FRANCISCO – Down 2-0 and facing the first loss at home of the season, the San Francisco volleyball team fought back to win the next three sets and defeat Cal State San Marcos 3-2 at Main Gym Friday evening. The Gators dropped the first two 25-23, 25-22 before rallying to win the final three 25-23, 25-21 and 15-8. Jessica Haynie had a career high 26 kills to lead the Gator's on the attack.
- Haynie's 26 kills ranks sixth most in a single match all-time.
- SF State finished with 18 total blocks, a new program record. Bekah Roth led the team with nine, followed by Chloe Henning and Trinity Barr with eight. Both numbers rank in the top ten in a single match.
- The Gators team total in kills (69) and assists (65) both rank in the top ten in a single match.
- Brianna DeBoer had 30 digs, a career high and top ten in a single match.
- The Gators improve to 20-4 and 13-4 in the CCAA while Cal State San Marcos falls to 12-11 and 9-8 in the CCAA.
- SF State Volleyball has only reach 20+ wins in a season three other times. The last time was in 2012.
- The Gators have won four out of their five five-set matches this season.
In a tight opening set, the Gators never trailed by more than three points. The Cougars took match point at 24-22. A block from Trinity Barr and Chloe Henning game the Gators the following serve. Sf State landed its fourth service error of the set to shut the door on a comeback.
After trading leads throughout the first half of the set, the Cougars went on a 6-0 scoring run to take the lead at 20-15. Haynie had four consecutive kills to keep the Gators in the set but Cal State San Marcos landed a kill at set point to end the set.
The Gators took their first lead of the set at 21-20 when Trinity Barr and Bekah Roth landed a block. A couple of attack errors by the Gators gave the Cougars the lead back at 23-22. Haynie landed a kill and the Gators landed back-to-back blocks to take their first set win of the match.
The Gators had some positive momentum swing in their direction when they went on a 6-0 scoring run and took an 11-7. The Cougars would come within one point late in the set. SF State closed it out with a 4-1 scoring with three of those kills coming from Haynie.
The final set was all Gators. After trading points to open the set, the Gators went on a 5-1 scoring run to force a timeout by the Cougars. The Cougars would not come within less than three the rest of the way as Haynie capped off an incredible evening with the final kill.
SF State will play its final home match tomorrow when they host Cal State East Bay. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. After the match, the Gators will honor their 10 seniors.
