SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The San Francisco State volleyball team saw its eight-match win streak snapped in the team's first loss of the season, a five-setter versus Cal State San Marcos in the Sports Center. The Gators took a 2-0 after winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-16 but dropped the remaining three 25-22, 25-17, and 15-13.
- The Gators fall to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play while Cal State San Marcos improves to 5-3 and 2-0. SF State's 8-0 start was the best in program history.
- Errors proved costly. The Gators made 18 attack errors, which matched a season-high, and hit a season-low .255. The Cougars hit .253, the highest allowed by an opponent this season.
- Jessica Haynie and Trinity Barr each had 20 kills. Barr's season-high came on a match-leading .576 hitting. Drew Morris added a dozen kills and Izzy Isaak finished with seven.
- Payton Jensen dished out a season-high 33 assists and Kimberly DeBoer added 19.
- The Cougars did a good job of keeping the ball in play with 77 digs, by far the most by an SF State opponent this season.
- Kassy Doering and Kelli Miechowicz led the Cougars with 17 kills apiece.
Tied 9-9, the Gators used a 10-2 run to break things open. The Gators led 21-13 but the Cougars called timeout and clawed their way back into the set.
In set two, SF State cut the Cougars lead to 15-14, which forced a Cougars timeout. That backfired as the Gators responded on an 11-1 run that included a pair of Jensen aces, four Gators kills, and a pair of block assists.
The tables began to turn in set three. The Gators trailed 9-8 after a pair of Cougars kills and saw the deficit slip to four. The Gators eventually tied the set at 17-17 but Cal State San Marcos responded with a 5-1 run and held on to cut into SF State's lead.
The Cougars stayed hot and began the fourth set on a 7-0 run that saw the Gators aced twice. SF State never got closer than six the remainder of the set.
Another slow start proved costly in the decisive set. The Cougars took a 4-0 lead, though the Gators climbed back into the match. Head Coach Matt Hoffman was issued a yellow card after arguing an apparent lift that saw the Gators trailing by four. That sparked the squad as the Gators went on tie things at 13-13 on a block by Barr and Bekah Roth. However, a pair of Gator attack errors gave the final two points to the Cougars.
The Gators return home for their next match on Friday, September 24 versus Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-8/0-2 CCAA).
