SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State volleyball swept Fresno Pacific on Tuesday night and moved to 3-0 on the young season. The Gators won 25-23, 25-18, 25-20.
- The Gators (3-0) hit a season-high .331 in the match and had three players in double digit kills (Drew Morris, 15; Jessica Haynie, 12; Trinity Barr, 10).
- Morris hit .433 and accounted for a season-high 15 kills.
- Haynie picked up a double-double with 15 digs to go with her dozen kills.
- Payton Jensen had the bulk of assists with a team-high 26. Fellow setter Kimberly DeBoer added 17.
- Libero Brianna DeBoer led all players with 20 digs, her second match with 20 digs.
- Lauren Wamsley had a team-high 12 kills for the Sunbirds (2-4).
SF State got off to a slow start thht saw the Gators aced twice but they quickly overcame a 6-1 deficit. Down five, Haynie put down a kill and an ace that kicked off a a five-point run that tied the set 8-8. FPU took the lead back but a rally that included kills from Haynie, Barr, and Chloe Henning put the Gators up 15-12. FPU again regained the lead at 18-17 but back-to-back Sunbirds errors swung the lead back to SF State. The Sunbirds led 23-21 but kills from Morris, Barr, and Haynie set up set point and the Gators won thanks to an FPU attack error.
Up four, Morris added two more kills in between a trio of FPU attack errors to take a 15-6 lead and the Gators' lead was never fewer than five after that.
Set three could have gone either way but the Gators took a slight edge with another kill by Morris, followed by one of Henning's four kills, and another FPU error. However, the Sunbirds answered with a couple of kills of their own and tied it at 16-16. Barr and Haynie notched kills, followed by yet another FPU error that made it 19-16. FPU pulled to within a point but a pair of emphatic kills from Izzy Isaak and a couple more FPU errors closed out the match.
"I'm glad we grinded out a win tonight." said SF State Head Coach Matt Hoffman. "Sometimes midweek matches can be a little challenging with short time to prepare but i was proud of the team for battling through it."
The Gators, in conjunction with Sonoma State, will host the Gator/Seawolf Classic on Friday and Saturday, September 10-11 with each institution hosting eight matches, four per day.
