VB | Gators Knock Off #13 Cal Poly Pomona

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State volleyball team returned home hungry for a win and swept #13 Cal Poly Pomona (26-24, 25-18, 26-24). The first place Broncos were the last remaining undefeated team in the conference. Cal Poly Pomona had no answer to the duo of Izzy Issak and Tamiya Wilson who averaged 6 and 5.83 points a set respectively.

  • The Gators improve to 9-6 on the season and 5-2 in the CCAA. The Broncos fall to 13-2 and 6-1 in the CCAA.
  • SF State improves to 2-3 against teams ranked in the top 25 this season.
  • Issak finished the match with 17 kills and a solo block. Wilson had 15 kills, an ace, three blocks and a match high 19 digs.
  • Kimberly DeBoer's 40 assists is the third most in a three-set match in the conference this season. The Gators' hitting percentage of 0.357 was the ninth best in a three set match in the conference this season.
  • The Gators finished with eight blocks on the night. Rebecca Rendahl led the way with five.

How it Happened

The Gators opened set one in a 6-0 hole. SF State slowly chipped away at the lead and forced a Bronco time-out when they came within one at 16-15. Down 24-21, a service error from the Broncos gave the Gators the serve back. Issak rattled off three kills in a row and Brianna DeBoer gave the Gators the set victory with an ace.

SF State got off on a better foot in set two, starting off 8-3 before the Bronco's first time-out. The Gators took their biggest lead of the night at 18-9, forcing the Broncos to side-out every time they got the serve back. Trinity Yates closed out the set with back to back kills.

Down 7-6, a Bronco service error started a 7-1 run to put the Gators up 13-8. Aidan Goodrich landed a kill to put the Gators at match point at 24-20 but the ensuing serve resulted in an error and the Broncos tied the match up. Goodrich got the Gators back to match point with a kill and Brianna DeBoer landed a match securing ace.
