SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State softball team won a pair of one-run games in thrilling fashion on Friday as the Gators took the first two games of the series from Stanislaus State, 3-2 and 2-1 in 12 innings.
- SF State has won 10 of its last 13 games. The Gators improve to 21-17 on the season and 9-13 in conference action. Stanislaus State slips to 12-23 overall and 6-19 in CCAA play.
- The Gators improve to 11-5 in one-run games this season.
- Daniella Guerrera had a homer in each game, bringing her total to three on the week and five, which ties the team lead.
- Teya Vincent had another two-hit game in game two, her seventh multi-hit game of the season. Vincent was also hit by a pitch for the team-leading fifth time.
- Kai DeLeon and Mia Misasi also had two-hit games.
- Brooklyn Heffernan and Kaitlyn Maddux both tossed complete games yet again. However, their stat lines varied greatly. Heffernan went seven innings and struck out a career-high nine while Kaitlyn Maddux was a workhouse. The righty went all 12 innings and gave up just one run, lowering her ERA to 2.01. Maddux has now thrown 122 innings, fifth most in the CCAA.
- Game two lasted 3:12, the team's longest affair of the season.
Game 1
- The Gators were no-hit through five innings, at which point they trailed 1-0 after Warriors leadoff batter Mikaela Ferreira homered into the yard of the one of the homes behind SFSU Softball Field in the top half of the inning.
- SF State broke through in the bottom half of the inning. Misasi worked a two-out walk, then DeLeon reached on a ball that gobbled up third baseman Sheridan Gulley. That opened the door for Marley Gonzales, who recorded the Gators' first hit of the day, a double through the left side that put the Gators in front, 2-1.
- Guerrera added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with her first homer of the day, a leadoff homer to dead center.
- The Warriors got a run back in the seventh. With the SF State outfield playing in, Katie Thornsberry hit a rope that sailed over Gonzales' head in center field. She scored on a sac fly but Heffernan got pinch hitter Jalyssa Ledesma swinging to end game one.
- Heffernan (8-9) allowed 10 hits but struck out a career-high nine. She also did not issue a walk.
- Kyndra Marzorini (4-6) allowed three runs, one earned, in six innings. She surrendered just three hits and walked five with five strikeouts.
Game 2
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, Guerrera made it back-to-back games with homers when she sent a 1-0 pitch to left field off that hit off the right side of the scoreboard.
- The lead held until the fourth. Warriors designated player Kaylee Heath led off with a single and first baseman Payton Applequist doubled home the tying run with two outs.
- The Gators came up with some timely defense. In the seventh, Ferreira singled. Applequist moved up and then tried to score when Ferreira beat the throw at first. However, Jordan threw home, where Liana Gonzalez applied the tag to keep the Warriors off the board.
- A 4-3 double play ended the Warriors half of the ninth. Stan State also stranded runners in the 10th and 11th, and Maddux got Karli Dalbianco swinging with the bases loaded in the 12th.
- The Gators also had their opportunities. They stranded a pair in the eighth and left a runner at second in the ninth.
- After two quick outs to begin the bottom of the 12th, DeLeon doubled down the right field line. Gonzales followed with a double to left field. Head Coach Alicia Reid sent DeLeon but she rounded third wide. The throw home beat her but she slid in and the ball was dropped for the winning run.
- Maddux (11-6) tossed 160 pitches and scattered a dozen hits over a dozen innings. She allowed just one run and one walk, and struck out five. Her 14 games are fourth most in the CCAA.
- Victoria Alcaron threw 164 pitches in the loss. She allowed two runs on 10 hits in 11 and two thirds innings. She walked one and struck out eight.
