MBB | Gators' Strong Shooting Performance Not Enough

ARCATA, Calif. – The San Francisco State men's basketball team had a strong opening half but could not come away with the win on Thursday night, falling to host Cal Poly Humboldt 83-69 at Lumberjack Arena.

  • With the loss, SF State falls to 3-5 on the year and is 1-1 in the CCAA. The Jacks improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. 
  • Overall, the Gators shot well from the field connecting on 45.0 percent from the floor going 27-for-60. 
  • In the first half alone, the Gators connected on 56.5 percent of their shots. 
  • Cal Poly Humboldt was red hot from long range, making 12 3-point field goals on the evening, going 12-for-27 from beyond the arc. 
  • The Gators had two players finish in double figures led by Pearse Uniacke's team-high 16 points. John Bakke chipped in 13.
  • Cal Poly Humboldt had three in double figures led by Rob Diaz's game-high 21 points.

How It Happened

Thursday night's game featured just four ties and four lead changes. The Gators jumped out to a six-point lead early in the first half thanks to an emphatic dunk from Uniacke to make it 12-6. 

An 8-2 run by the Jacks tied the game at 14-14 with 12:32 to play. The Gators maintained their lead for much of the first half, leading by five 24-19 with 9:43 to play following a layup from Bakke. 

An 11-2 run late in the first half made it 39-30 in favor of the home team. The Gators cut the deficit to four following a three on a fastbreak from CJ Bellamy. He finished with nine points – six coming in the opening period. 

Out of the break, the Gators cut the deficit to one thanks to a pair of free throws from Tyjean Burrell, two of his nine points on the night. The Jacks were able to put the game away thanks to a 12-0 run midway through the second half and led by as much as 26 with 6:55 to play.
