LOS ANGELES – The San Francisco State men's basketball team lost its second meeting with Cal State LA , 81-72, on Thursday night at University Gym.
- SF State falls to 14-10 overall and are sixth in the CCAA at 8-8. The Golden Eagles, who are receiving votes in the Top 25 poll, improve to 17-5 and are in a three-way tie in for second in the CCAA at 12-4.
- Jailen Daniel-Dalton has 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for his sixth double-double. That marked the first time since December 2, 2021 that a Gators player had 15 or more rebounds (Toby Okwuokei, 16).
- John Bakke added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Jonah Roth had 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.
- Isaiah Fields led all players with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting including five three-pointers. Corey Cofield added 13 points with nine points coming at the free throw line. Dominic Escobar added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
- The Gators shot 40 percent (24-of-60) but the Golden Eagles shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55), including 48 percent (12-of-25) from deep.
- SF State dominated the glass, 44-30.
In the first five and a half minutes, the Gators lept out to a 13-5 start. A 9-2 Golden Eagles lead cut the advantage to one and
Tyjean Burrell's three-pointer kept the lead at two possessions but Cal State LA kept coming. The Golden Eagles went 6-of-8 over a four-minute period for a 15-0 run and a commanding 29-18 lead. That was part of a larger 32-7 run that saw the deficit grow to 32-7. Bakke finished the half with a three-point play but the Gators found themselves down 42-28 at the half.
SF State outscored the Golden Eagles 44-39 in the second half and made thing interesting late. Down 16, the Gators went 8-of-11 from the field and included 11 points from Bakke, which resulted in a 26-14 run that pulled the Gators to within six with under two minutes to go.
Parsa Hadjighasemi hit an off-balance three in the corner that cut the lead to five with under 30 seconds to play but the Golden Eagles iced the game at the free throw line with four makes.
