BSB | Gators Shut Out Warriors in Series Finale to Take Series Win

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team fell short of another comeback in game one's 8-7 loss to Stanislaus State but shut out the Warriors 3-0 in game two to take the series.

  • SF State sits at 23-15 and CCAA at 17-11 while Stanislaus State sits at 14-24-1 and 10-20 in conference play. The series win is the fourth conference series win the Gators have this season with three more series to go.
  • The Gators picked up their second shut-out of the season in game two.
  • Jacob French hit his fourth triple of the season in game two and added a double in game one. His 55 hits ranks in the top ten in the conference.
  • AJ Schrader and Anthony Alvarez also hit doubles in game one.
  • Armando Murillo had four runs on the day with three coming in game one. The Gators' lead-off man sits in the top ten in the conference in runs scored.
  • Justin Johnson recorded his 48th RBI in game two to take sole possession of seventh all-time.

How It Happened 

Stanislaus' Alex Solis hit a lead-off homer run in the first for the first run of the game. Armando Murillo hit a lead-off single, stole second, advanced on a fly out and scored off a wild pitch to tie things up. In the top of the third, the Warriors Kyle Rachels hit an RBI double and was brought home by Flavio Perez to take a 3-1 lead. The Warriors added a pair of runs off an RBI double by Perez in the fifth and an error allowed two more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-1.
 
Gators rallied in the seventh to cut the deficit to two. Anthony Alvarez came in to pinch hit, doubled and was brought home by Murillo. Laferriere singled down the right line to bring in another run. With bases loaded, Santos singled and added two more runs. The Warriors added a run off the Sac fly in the top of the eighth. French and Laferriere hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it a one run game heading into the ninth. Santos drew a lead-off walk and Cole Thompson came in to pinch run. The next two batters fly out and Thompson was caught stealing to end the game.

On The Mound

  • David Eichhorn (4-2) went six innings in the loss and gave up 12 hits, seven runs, six earned runs and one walk. He also tossed six strikeouts.
  • Garrett Jensen pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits and throwing one strikeout.
  • Nicholas Thompson pitched in the eighth and gave up a run off two hits.
  • Theo Dopkins gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
  • Austin Balentine (5-2) went 6.1 innings in the win while Patrick Sweeny picked up his first save for Stanislaus.

How It Happened 

Murillo drew a four pitch walk with his first at bat and Justin Johnson brought him home with a single to left. French hit a two-out triple in the fifth inning and advanced home off an error from the third baseman. Kyle Olympia added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single to left.
 
Andrew Silva stepped on the mound in the seventh to close the game out. The Warriors loaded the bases with two-outs in the top of the seventh but Silva induced a ground out to end the game.

  • Ian Sullivan (3-1) made his third start of the season and gave the Gators five strong innings of work. He allowed three hits and one walk while tossing one strikeout.
  • French took the mound in the sixth and faced the minimum in a scoreless outing.
  • Silva earned his fifth save of the season after pitching in the seventh.
  • Trent Huff (0-5) was on the hook for the loss.
