MBB | Gators Fall in Final Minute to Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's basketball team led nearly the entire game on Saturday afternoon but Stanislaus State scored six points in the final 30 seconds as the Gators fell 61-57 inside Fitzpatrick Arena.

  • SF State slips to 8-12 action on the year while the Warriors improve to 9-11 overall. Both teams are 6-8 in CCAA play and are in a four-way tie for sixth place.
  • The Gators held the Warriors to 32.7 percent (18-of-55), the lowest by any opponent this season. However, the Warriors went 18-of-21 at the free throw line, including six in the final half minute.
  • Tyjean Burrell followed up his career performance with a game-high 19 points. Pearse Uniacke added 13 points. John Bakke added eight points in the loss.
  • Jeremiah Jones also had a game-high 19 points for the Warriors. Daniel Ameyaw scored 12 points and Jason Cibull finished with 11 points.
  • The Gators won the rebounding battle, 39-36. Bakke and Burrell had eight apiece for the Gators, and Cameron Walker led Stan State with eight as well.

How It Happened

The Gators led 28-24 at halftime and led by as many as eight points near the five-minute mark in the first half.  Stan State tied the game at 58 at the 17-minute mark in the second half and the lead exchanged hands 24 times in the game. The Gators regained the lead 55-54 with 1:51 to go on a Uniacke layup. Caden Flowers fouled Jonathan Tchengang with 1:23 to go and Tchengang made one free throw to tie the game at 55. Jones was fouled on an inbounds play under the Warriors basket with 29.3 seconds remaining and made both free throws to put the Warriors up 57-55. The Gators called timeout and Flowers missed a shot with nine seconds left. The Gators were forced to foul and Jason Cibull made both free throws with 5.9 seconds left. Burrell made an uncontested layup to keep it a two-point game but the Gators had to foul yet again and Jones made both free throws to ice the game.
