MBB | Three-Pointers the Difference in Loss to Wildcats

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's basketball team was unable to slow a hot-shooting Chico State squad in an 82-65 loss on Thursday night inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.

  • SF State slips to 9-14 overall and 7-10 in CCAA play, into a tie for eighth place. Chico State improves to 18-5 overall and 14-3 in CCAA play, clinching a berth to the CCAA Tournament.
  • The Wildcats shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53), including 52 percent (13-of-25) from deep. The remarkable part of that was the Wildcats' first-half shooting. Chico State was 19-of-26 (73.1 percent), including 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from deep.
  • Tyjean Burrell led the Gators with 21 points. He leads the team in both minutes played (29.8) and points per game (14.3).
  • John Bakke added 13 points in the loss.
  • Pearse Uniacke scored eight points, shared a game-high seven rebounds, and had a pair of blocks. He continues to pace the CCAA with 2.0 blocks per game. He has 47 blocks on the season, putting him fourth all-time in a single season. He is also third overall in career blocks with 66. 
  • Caden Harris led all players with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-6 from deep. Jojo Murphy added 21 points. Both players also had seven rebounds apiece.

How It Happened


The Gators made the first shot of the game, a Burrell three-pointer but the Wildcats led the remainder of the night. Harris, Murphy, and Isaiah Kerr hit three-pointers for the Wildcats as Chico State made 10 of its first 12 baskets. By halftime, the Gators trailed 55-38.

SF State trailed by 10 with 13 minutes to go. Donovan Cooks and Caleb Oden each had a steal that led to a layup, then Oden had a steal and Bakke finished the fast break that cut the lead to four with 11:36 to go. Still down four with 10 minutes to go, Murphy hit a three-pointer. Kerr followed with a jumper and Harris hit a fast-break three-pointer that pushed the deficit back to 12 and forced a Gators timeout. SF State would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
