CHICO, Calif. —
Diego Martinez scored a career-high 26 points but the San Francisco State men's basketball team fell on the road Thursday, 85-70, at Chico State.
- SF State falls to 3-20 on the season and 2-15 in CCAA action. Chico State improves to 8-14 overall and 6-11 in conference play.
- Diego Martinez followed up his 24 points in last week's win over Cal State LA with another career night on Thursday. He went 9-of-18 from the field including 4-of-8 from deep. Martinez has scored 20-plus points in four of his last six games and has scored in double figures 10 times this season, including the last six.
- Mason Harris scored 11 points, two shy of his career high, and Markees Williams added 10 points.
- Six different Wildcats reached double digits. Chico State was led by Isaiah Brewington and Chris Holley, who each scored 16.
- Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor. The Wildcats were 29-of-55 (52.7 percent) and the Gators were 27-of-53 (50.9 percent).
- The Wildcats edged the Gators 26-23 in the rebounding battle.
Both teams scored on their initial possessions, with the Gators answering with a third-chance opportunity from Evan McKnight. However, the Wildcats scored the next 11 points over a four-minute span. The Gators pulled to within four on Milandev Chatha's layup at the 12-minute mark but the Wildcats built their lead back to double digits over the next two minutes. SF State trimmed the lead to within a possession with 6:30 to go. Haris, Myles Pollard, and Martinez all got to the rim for layups to make it 26-23 but the Wildcats answered and had the lead back to double digits again by the four-minute mark and maintainted a nine-point lead, 41-32, headed into the half.
The Gators cut the lead down to seven in the second half but didn't record back-to-back stops until the 11-minute mark. SF State managed to trail by just 10 at that point and still trailed by 10 as late as 2:27 to go after a Williams jumper. The Wildcats outscored the Gators 10-5 over the final span to seal the game.
