ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The San Francisco State volleyball team closed out the weekend with a 3-1 loss (26-28, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25) to #20 Western Washington. Despite 24 kills from
Grace Witcher, the Gators fell short of taking close sets to shift the match in their favor.
- SF State falls to 0-3 on the season while Western Washington improves to 2-1.
- Aidan Goodrich had a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs.
- Witcher also added two service aces to bring her career total to 75.
- The Gators had a slightly higher hitting percentage than the Vikings and posted a .215 percentage compared to the Viking's .210.
- Delaney Speer had 24 kills to lead the Vikings.
Goodrich had a pair of kills in an early 7-1 set one lead. Errors and service aces allowed the Vikings to come back and retake the lead. At set point down 24-21, three different Gators landed a kill to force the set to continue. A service error by Melanie Hewlett put the Vikings up one and Speer closed out the set with a kill.
A slow start put the Gators behind early in set two. Down by seven, Witcher had two kills during a 6-2 run that cut the lead down to 23-20. The Vikings reached set point on the next rally and the Gators fought to come back but the Vikings shut the door and earned their 25th point to take a 2-0 lead.
Set three saw neither team lead by more than three points. Paige Moyneur got the Gators to set point up 24-22 but a service error on the next rally gave Western Washington the serve back. The Goodrich recorded a kill for the Gators first set win of the weekend. Witcher had five kills in the set while Goodrich had four.
Tied at 3-3, Western Washington went on a 9-0 run to take a sizable lead. Outside some late offense at the end of set, the Gators never could find enough of a offensive rhythm to complete the comeback.
