SAN FRANCISCO – Junior Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif.) knocked down a match-high 18 kills, while freshman Lisa Morgan (La Quinta, Calif.) delivered six service aces to lead the San Francisco State women's volleyball team to a four-set victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at the Main Gymnasium.
The Gators were triumphant for the third straight match, improving to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Meanwhile, the Toros suffered their ninth defeat in a row, dropping to 1-14 on the year and 0-7 in league play.
“I am happy with the way we served tonight,” said SF State head coach Michelle Patton. “We stayed aggressive throughout the entire match. Offensively, we had a slow start, but I thought we came back and did a nice job in games three and four.
The Gators outhit CSUDH, .295-.140, maintaining a 57-31 advantage in kills, while serving up 11 aces as a team.
Holding a slim 11-9 lead, SF State went on a 14-3 run to take the opening set by a count of 25-12. The Toros turned the tables on the second frame, however, handing the Gators their first set defeat in three matches, 25-20. SF State saw an 8-8 deadlock disintegrate into a 17-10 deficit and was forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the set.
Unfazed, the Gators stormed back with a vengeance in the third set, hitting at a .412 clip with 17 kills compared to just four Toro kills en route to a 25-10 thumping. In the final stanza, SF State appeared poised to take control after opening up a 15-11 bulge. CSUDH would not go quietly , scoring five straight points to take its final lead of the evening at 16-15.
However, an attack error by the Toros' Ashley Clark and a kill by freshman Kyle Lamet (Benicia, Calif.) swung the momentum back in favor of the Gators as part of a 10-3 flurry to cinch the match.
Lamet finished with 10 kills, while fellow classmate Mary Maiocco (Bakersfield, Calif.) chipped in 29 assists. SF State also received double-digit digs from freshman Christina Johnson (Wildomar, Calif.) (16) and Perkins (10).
The Gators wrap up their two-match homestand on Saturday, when they play host to Cal State L.A. starting at 7 p.m.
