Seaside, Calif.--- CSU Monterey Bay Otters, who are ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Division II West Region Poll, swept their second consecutive CCAA doubleheader from the visiting 25th ranked SF State Gators (26-22, 12-16) 4-3 and 6-2 this afternoon at the Otter Softball Complex in Seaside. With the sweep, the Otters (31-22, 18-14 CCAA) stay in fourth place in the CCAA while the Gators fall to seventh place with one week left in conference play.
Danielle Chapman's solo home run to right field gave the Gators an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In her next at bat,
Chapman hit a two-out solo home run to give the Gators a 2-0 lead in the third.
Kendra Wood's RBI double with two outs scored
Jordanna Freemer with the inning's second run and gave SF State a 3-0 lead.
The Otters moved within a run of SF State with a two-run inning in the bottom of the third. CSU Monterey Bay tied the game at 3-3 on Jessica Boyle's two-out RBI single up the middle in the fifth. The game went into extra-innings when Homa Shafii scored on a Shae Olds' single to give the Otters the 4-3 win in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Jessica Boyle (6-7) picked up the win in relief for CSU Monterey Bay, pitching 7.1 innings of scoreless relief while giving up six hits, striking out five and walking four. Shafii finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the way for the Otters.
Kendra Wood (10-6) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching 2.1 innings of relief while giving up two hits and one run while striking out two.
Ashley Jackson pitched seven innings in the start for the Gators, giving up seven hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out three.
Lea Cardenas had four hits for SF State and
Chapman had two.
In the night cap, Olds hit a solo home run to right field to give the Otters an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Otters made it 2-0 with a run in the second inning. They added two more with a two-run fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The Gators cut the Otter lead in half with a two-run fifth keyed by a two-run two-out double to right center by
Kelsey Wood.
CSU Monterey Bay came right back as Olds hit a two-run home run to center field to increase its lead to 6-2, a lead the Otters would not relinquish. Angela Cabral (17-8) picked up the win for the Otters, pitching seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking four. Olds and Rachelle Morales each had two hits a piece to lead the way for the Otters.
Wood (10-7) recorded the loss in the start for the Gators, pitching four innings, giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out two and walking three.
SF State will return home for the final time this season with a four-game CCAA series against the 16th ranked UC San Diego Tritons beginning with a 1pm starting doubleheader on Friday, April 25.
