San Francisco, Calif..--- In their regular season home finale, SF State's softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with the 16th ranked UC San Diego Tritons (32-22, 15-17 CCAA) winning game one 4-3 and losing the nightcap 7-5. SF State ends it season at 29-23 overall and 15-17 in the CCAA. The Gators are currently eighth in the region and now await until May 4 to see if they receive a bid to the 2008 NCAA Division II National Softball Championships.
In game one, Sarah Woofter gave the Tritons a 1-0 lead on a lead-off home run in the top of the first inning. The Tritons added another run in the first on a RBI double by Jennifer Maze. The Gators cut the Triton lead in half on a RBI single by
Danielle Chapman in the bottom of the first inning that scored
Karolyn Gubbine. SF State tied the game in the third on a RBI single by
Kendra Wood. The Gators took the lead in the fifth when
Gubbine scored when the Tritons misplayed
Wood's infield ground out. They added an insurance run in the sixth on a
Gubbine RBI single that scored
Lea Cardenas.
The Tritons put a scare into the Gators in their half of the seventh when Megan Grace scored with two outs on a RBI by Amanda Eliades.
Ashley Jackson got the final Triton to strike out with runners on second and third.
Jackson(15-8) picked up the win, pitching seven innings giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out seven and walking three. Gubbine was 3 for 4 with a RBI and scored two runs for SF State.
Melissa Ward (14-14) picked up the loss for UC San Diego while Woofter had two of the Tritons' four hits.
In game two, Jennifer Maze hit a two-out two-run home run to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Gators tied it in their half of the first on RBIs by
Jordanna Freemer and
Kendra Wood. They took the lead with a two-run second on RBIs by
Freemer and
Chapman.
UC San Diego moved in within one run in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth on a grand slam home run by Allison May. SF State scored its final run in the seventh on a RBI single by Cardenas to make the final 7-5 UC San Diego.
Nicole Fullerton (2-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 5.2 innings of relief while striking out five and walking two. She gave up just two hits and one run. Maze had three of the Tritons' seven hits.
Kendra Wood (11-8) picked up the loss for SF State while three Gators had two hits a piece including
Freemer going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
