BELMONT, Calif. – The San Francisco State women's volleyball won its second straight match on Tuesday night with a three-set triumph over Notre Dame de Namur (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) in a non-conference clash at Walter Gleason Gym. The Gators (9-6) bested the Argonauts (1-19) for the second time this season, handing the host team its seventh consecutive defeat.
“We actually knew that Notre Dame de Namur was going to come out and be scrappy,” said SF State head coach Michelle Patton. “They have a couple of excellent players and they gave us a very good match as we expected.”
Despite their modest record, the Argonauts gave the Gators all they could handle throughout the evening, opening a 19-15 advantage in a back-and-forth first set. However, a kill by freshman Lisa Morgan (La Quinta, Calif.) swung the momentum back in favor of SF State as the visitors tallied four straight points to knot things up at 19-19.
After the two sides traded the next four scores, the Gators sandwiched a kill from freshman Mary Maiocco (Bakersfield, Calif.) and a service ace from fellow classmate Christina Johnson (Wildomar, Calif.) around two NDNU attack errors to capture the opening frame.
It was more of the same in the second set until SF State buckled under the weight of an 8-2 Argo run as a 15-11 lead quickly turned into a 19-17 deficit. The Gators regrouped in time, however, fashioning an 8-3 flurry of their own to close out the set.
The Gator defense was the key in third set as the Argonauts came up empty with a .000 hitting percentage while committing eight errors. SF State took control after NDNU went out in front for the last time at 14-12, holding their hosts to just two points the rest of the way.
Individually, junior Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif.) once again led the Gator attack with a match-high 15 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. The duo of Maiocco and Johnson posted 30 assists and 16 digs, respectively, while junior Sloane Williams (Henderson, Nev.) registered four total blocks, including three solos.
SF State returns to the court on Friday, Oct. 3, when it plays host to Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at the Main Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
