ANAHEIM, Calif. - Freshman guard Nefi Perdomo scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists to lead San Francisco State to a season-opening 78-53 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Friday at the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Perdomo was one of four Gators (1-0) to score double figures as Derek Fletcher (San Jose, California, Branham)and Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)scored 11 points apiece and Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra)chipped in 10 points.
"It was a solid first time out," said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. "Derek Fletcher was very good and Nefi Perdomo handled himself very well," added Treseler. "Mike Lavelle, Ralph Nevarez, and Jeremy Francis gave us a good push late in the first half." "Our defense was obviously the key and we'll need to continue that over the next two nights."
Maurico Stinson led Kentucky Wesleyan (0-1) with 12 points and Willie Richardson added 11.
San Francisco State was in control from the outset as it built a seven-point lead five minutes into the contest and extended the lead to 17 points with 4:05 remaining in the first when O'Rourke hit a 3-pointer to give the Gators a 37-20 lead.
Displaying an impressive inside game, San Francisco State used a 21-12 rebounding advantage in 11 3-pointers to take a 40-25 halftime lead.
O'Rourke led a balanced scoring attack with seven points first-half points. The Gators had seven different players scored in the first half.
San Francisco State continued its impressive play in the second half and took a 75-43 lead - its biggest advantage of the game - with 4:23 remaining.
The hot-shooting Gators connected on 58.7 percent (27 of 46) of its field goal attempts, including 62.5 percent (10 of 16) from behind the 3-point arc, while limiting the Panthers to just 30.5 percent (18 of 59) from the floor.
The Disney Classic continues on Saturday when San Francisco State plays Grand Canyon at 2:30 p.m. Kentucky Wesleyan and Western Washington will get play started with a noon contest.
