ANAHEIM, Calif. - Sophomore guard Cameron Severson scored a game-high 19 points and senior forward Michael Duty added 13 as Western Washington defeated San Francisco State 71-52 during the final day of the Disney West Coast Tip-Off Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday.
There was a three-way tie for the Tip-Off Classic Championship between SF State, Western Washington, and Kentucky Wesleyan (who defeated Grand Canyon 71-52 later this evening). All three teams finished at 2-1.
"Western Washington played good defense and we never got into a rhythm," said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. "We need our defense to be great and it wasn't," added Treseler. "We got a lot of these three games and I am excited about where the team can go if we stay committed."
Junior guard Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wis., Beloit Memorial HS, Reedley College) led the Gators (2-1) with 13 points, while Tim Pratt (Eureka, Calif., Eureka HS, College of the Redwoods) added nine.
Western Washington held a substantial advantage on the boards as it out-rebounded SF State, 40-29. The Vikings shot 44.6 percent from the field while limiting the Gators to just 34.7 percent from the floor. SF State was able to convert on just 29.2 percent of its attempts (7 for 24) in the second half.
