SAN FRANCISCO – Freshman Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, Calif., Skyline HS ) tossed in a season-high 17 points to lead the San Francisco State men's basketball squad to a convincing 59-37 win over Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference game Saturday night in the Main Gymnasium.
In addition, the Gators (8-2) received a second-straight 15-point effort from senior Jeremy Francis (San Francisco, Calif., George Washington HS, Mayville State Univ.) to capture their third victory in a row, while the Argonauts (1-6) were paced by Bennie Murray's 10 points and game-best nine rebounds en route to their sixth consecutive defeat.
Also aiding the SF State cause was junior Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wis., Beloit Memorial HS, Reedley College), who tied a season high with seven assists, while fellow classmate Tim Pratt (Eureka, Calif., Eureka HS, College of the Redwoods) posted a season-best three blocks.
The Gators connected on 26 of their 55 field goal attempts (47.1 percent), while limiting NDNU to a 31.3 percent clip on 15-of-48 shooting from the floor. SF State held a 37-31 rebounding advantage as senior Derek Fletcher (San Jose, Calif., Branham HS) and junior Joshua Hash (Eureka, Calif., Eureka HS, College of the Redwoods) came away with seven caroms apiece. The Gators also won the turnover battle, 20-15, outscoring the Argonauts 20-9 on those miscues.
SF State, which never trailed in the contest, jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a Fletcher tip-in at the 13:13 mark of the first half and never looked back. After a foul shot by NDNU's Chris Silzer narrowed the gap to 22-13 with 5:18 remaining, the Gators closed out the period with a 9-4 run to restore their double-digit cushion at 31-17.
SF State switched on the afterburners with a 24-7 blitz to open the second half as a Francis jumper gave the host school an insurmountable 55-24 advantage with 7:15 to go in the game. The Gators also enjoyed a 31-point bulge at 57-26 after a layup by senior Daniel Trammel (Oceanside, Calif., El Camino)with 3:23 remaining. With the outcome no longer in doubt, the Argonauts put together an 11-2 spurt in the final minutes to account for the final score.
SF State will have the next 17 days off to break for final exams and the holidays before diving back into conference play at Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Tip-off at the Otters' home gym is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
