SAN FRANCISCO---- TheChico State Wildcats spoiled SF State's home opener by defeating the Gators 66-51 in both teams' conference opener at SF State's Main Gymnasium. Jon Baird led the way for the Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 CCAA) with a game high 14 points and was one of three Chico State players to score in double figures.
“We were beaten in every area,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler. “Chico State has done a good job upgrading its team,” added Treseler. “We are going to have to rebound tomorrow night against Cal State Stanislaus.”
SF State (5-2, 0-1 CCAA) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes capped by a
Derek Fletcher tip-in. The Wildcats tied the game at 8-8 as they outscored Chico State 8-2 in the next three minutes.
The visitors took its largest lead of the half, 19-13, at the 6:54 mark when Zach Graves hit a three off an assist from Jay Flores. SF State cut the visitors' lead to three, three times in the next five minutes with the last one coming on a three by
Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra)at the 1:49 mark off an assist from
Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College). Jon Baird's three with 39 seconds left in the half gave the Wildcats a 28-22 lead heading into the locker room.
Chico State increased its lead to 39-26 in the first five minutes of the second half and never looked back. The Gators did not go away as they cut the lead to 48-41 on a free throw by Hoskins with 5:51 to go, but that is the closest SF State could get as the Wildcats built their lead to 16 at 66-40 with 1:59 left on the cloci and held on for the 66-51 win.
SF State did hold the Wildcats to 36% shooting from the field, but only shot 34% from the field including 25% from three-point land. Chico State out-rebounded the Gators 47-38 and forced 20 SF State turnovers.
Terrence Pellum added 13 points for Chico State, while Damario Sims added 10 point.
Derek Fletcher (San Jose, California, Branham)led the way for the Gators with his first double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. O'Rourke and Hoskins each chipped in nine points for SF State while Hoskins had seven assists and two steals.
SF State will continue its four-game home stand tomorrow evening for a 7:30pm tip-off with Cal State Stanislaus. The Warriors lost 73-67 in overtime at Cal State Monterey Bay this evening in Seaside.
