Cal Poly Pomona Holds off SF State, 57-44, in CCAA First Round

Phoenix O'Rourke scored a team-high 10 points, including two treys, vs. CPP on Tuesday.

POMONA, Calif. – The 2008-09 campaign came to a premature end for the San Francisco State men's basketball team Tuesday night with a 57-44 setback to Cal Poly Pomona in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at Kellogg Gym in Pomona, Calif.  With the loss, the Gators finish the season with a 14-14 overall record, while the Broncos (20-6) advance to the CCAA semifinals on Friday, March 6, in San Bernardino, Calif.

“I could be happy right now, but I couldn't be prouder,” said SF State head coach Bill Treseler.  “This group has accomplished a lot, and we hate to see it end this way.  But the fight and determination in the last 20 minutes is a great lasting memory of these guys.”

For the second straight game, the Gators mounted a late charge after facing a sizeable deficit in the second half.  Against CPP, SF State trailed by as many as 20 points before narrowing the gap to six with just over four minutes left in the game.  However, the Gators were unable to maintain the momentum as the Broncos pulled away for the victory.

Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra) scored a team-high 10 points, including a pair of 3-point baskets, while Darryl Robinson (San Mateo, California, San Mateo, Canada College) and Brad Visman (Placerville, California, El Dorado, UC Riverside) added nine apiece.  Conversely, Larry Gordon notched a double-double for the Broncos with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds.

The Gators connected on just 15 of their 56 field-goal attempts (26.8 percent), including a 2-for-18 clip from beyond the arc, while CPP made 19 of 42 shots from the floor (45.2 percent).  The Broncos also held a 45-31 rebounding advantage and forced more turnovers, 19-13.

Leading 32-14 at halftime, CPP increased its advantage to 20 on a Gordon layup in the opening minute of the second half.  However, the Gators displayed their mettle over the next 15 minutes, staging a 28-14 run to pull within 48-42, capped by a Robinson layup with 4:11 remaining in the contest.

After the Broncos missed the second half of a 1-and-1 opportunity, SF State had the chance to cut the deficit to at least five.  However, a 3-point attempt was off the mark, while Gordon promptly converted a layup at the other end to give the host team a 51-42 cushion with 2:26 left on the clock.  CPP then hit  six free throws down the
stretch to hold on for the victory.
