Rohnert Park, Calif.--- SF State's softball team split their final doubleheader of the 2009 season by losing game one 3-2 to the Sonoma State Seawolves (33-21, 17-14 CCAA) and winning the night cap 3-0. The Gators finished the regular season with a 31-24 overall record and a 13-19 record in the CCAA.
In game one, SF State scored first on a two-out two-run single by
Danielle Chapman which scored both
Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) and
Lauren Candia (San Francisco, California, University of San Francisco) to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Sonoma State tied the game on a two-out two-run triple by pinch-hitter Brittney Martinez.
The score remained tied at 2-2 until the Seawolf seventh when Nicole Cordova drove in the game-winning run on a single up the middle with no-one out.
Lindsey Emmel (16-9) picked up the win pitching 7 innings, giving up thr4ee hits and two runs while striking out two and walking two. Cordova finished game one 2 for 4 with one RBI while Brittney Martinez had two RBIs for the Seawolves.
Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent) (16-11) finished the regular season with a loss pitching 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out five and walking one. Chapman had two RBIs in game one for the Gators.
In the nightcap,
Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland) (8-6) pitched her second straight complete game shutout en route to her eighth victory of the season. She pitched seven innings of two hit ball while striking out six and striking out seven. Brittany Williams (11-4) picked up the loss for the Seawolves.
The Gators scored all the runs that Truan needed in the first.
Danielle Chapman (San Jose, California, San Jose City College) led off the inning on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Monica Amburgey. She scored on a two-out single by
Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) while Wood scored on a single by
Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger) to give the Gators a 2-0 lead. SF State added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single by
Monica Amburgey (Monterey, California, Monterey)which scored
Karolyn Gubbine. Chapman finished the night cap with two this for the Gators.
SF State, ranked No. 10 in this week's NCAA Division II West Region Rankings, will now wait until next Sunday, May 3 when the NCAA Division II National Softball Committee announces the field for the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championships.
