Gators Keep Rolling; Sweep Dominican for Fifth Straight Win

Halimah Oswald had a match-high five aces to go along with 10 kills on Friday against Dominican.
SAN FRANCISCO –The San Francisco State women's volleyball team continued its winning ways on Friday with a three-set sweep over Dominican (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) during the second day of action at the 2009 California Clash in the Main Gymnasium. The Gators were triumphant for the sixth match in row, climbing to 6-1 on the year, while the Penguins saw their record dip to 1-5 overall.

“Offensively, we struggled tonight to find a good rhythm but still managed to find a way to win,” said SF State head coach Michelle Patton. “Beth Perkins led us on the outside and Jennifer Jasper did a nice job in the middle. We will be looking to improve our offense on Saturday against Saint Martin's and Chaminade.”

Jasper paced the Gators with a .538 attack percentage on 8-of-13 hitting with only a single miscue to her credit, while Perkins knocked down a team-best 11 kills on 33 attempts (.303), recording her fifth consecutive double-double after cranking out 12 digs. Halimah Oswald also reached double figures in kills, finishing with 10 on the evening to go along with a game-high five service aces. In addition, SF State received key contributions from Iris Tolenda (33 assists) and Vanessa Shaw (16 digs).

Despite hitting just .171 as a team, the Gators limited the opposition to a .095 attack percentage as Dominican totaled just five kills in the second set while committing five errors on 26 tries (.000).

The Gators held a 13-9 advantage in the first stanza; however, four straight attack errors brought the Penguins back into contention at 13-13. Although Dominican kept things close, SF State was never fronted the rest of the way, taking the lead for good at 18-17 as a Perkins kill ignited an 8-4 run to close out the set.

The Gators opened up a 10-4 bulge to open the second frame before a 6-1 Penguin spurt narrowed the gap to 11-10. SF State withstood the Dominican challenge, however, fashioning an 8-1 flurry of its own to regain a comfortable 19-11 cushion en route to capturing the set.

The action heated up in the third set as the two sides witnessed nine ties and five lead changes. With the score knotted at 20-20, the Gators went ahead to stay on a Jasper kill and secured the victory moments later on a Penguin attack error.

SF State wraps up competition at the California Clash on Saturday with a pair of matches against Saint Martin's and Chaminade, respectively, in the Main Gymnasium. The Gators square off against the Saints beginning at 2 p.m., before a showdown against the Silverswords in the tournament finale starting at 7 p.m.
