Gators Fall 92-80 to Cal State San Bernardino in First Round of CCAAs

Nefi Perdomo Had a Game High 22 Points in the Gators' Loss in the First Round of the CCAAs

SAN BERNARDINO---  SF State's men's basketball team fell 92-80 to the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes in the First Round of the CCAA Basketball Championships at Coussoulis Arena this evening in San Bernardino to finish the regular season with a 17-14 overall record.  This was the Gators' third straight non-losing season since the mid-80's and also their second 17-win season in three years. 

 

“As always, the Gators battled hard for 40 minutes,” said SF State Head Coach Bill Treseler.  “I am extremely proud of the commitment and accomplishment this season,” added Treseler.  Jeremy Francis (San Francisco, California, Mayville State University)and Derek Fletcher (San Jose, California, Branham)go out as solid contributors to a very good team and I believe the future for this program is bright,”

 

SF State held its own in the first half as there were 12 ties with the biggest lead being an 8 point lead by the Coyotes going into the half, 39-31.  The Gators held Cal State San Bernardino's leading scorer, Bryan LeDuc, to no points in the first half while Tim Pratt (Eureka, California, College of the Redwoods) scored 13 of his 15 points in the first 20 minutes of the game.  SF State also shot 60% from the field, while Cal State San Bernardino shot 48%.

 

Back to back three-pointers by Nefi Perdomo and Phoenix O'Rourke cut the Coyote lead to four (41-37) in the first two minutes of the second stanza.  Cal State San Bernardino (20-7) went on a 12-5 in the next three minutes to take a 53-42 lead.  Nefi Perdomo's old-fashioned three-point play at the 13:20 cut the Coyote lead to 53-57, but the hosts increased their lead to 65-51 with 9:35 to go in the game.

 

The Gators would not go away as Jeremy Francis' three with 7:24 to go to cut the lead to 70-61.  Once again,  Cal State San Bernardino increased its lead to double digits and held on for the 92-80 victory. 

 

Five Coyotes scored in double digits led by Lawrence Tyron and Corey Caston each with 17 points while Aaron Hill had 16 points.

SF State also had four players in double figures led by Nefi Perdomo (Oakland, California, Skyline )with 22 points while Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College) chipped in 16 and Phoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra)added 10 points go along with Pratt's 15.  The Gators also shot 56% from the field and 46.7% from three-point land and 85% from the charity stripe.
