Gators End Day One of TOC with 3-1 Win over Hawai'i-Hilo

Vanessa Truan Struck Out 3 in the Gators' 3-1 Win over Hilo
TURLOCK, Calif.--- SF State's softball team went 1-2 in Day One of the Tournament of Champions, presented by Mizuno in Turlock this afternoon. The Gators started off the day with two losses to Western Washington (3-0) and No. 18 Grand Canyon (4-2) and ended the night with a 4-2 win over Hawai'i-Hilo. 
 
The Gators jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of their game with the Vulcans.Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) hit a lead-off double to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Summer Powell (Rocklin, California, Rocklin ). She then scored on a single by Kelsey Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook). Then with two-outs, Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty)hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 3-0 SF State. 
 
The game remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Hawai'i-Hilo loaded the bases. Kanani Numata scored when Emily Heineman reached on an error. Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent) came in to retire the final three batters. She also retired the Vulcans in the seventh to preserve the 3-1 win for the Gators to record her first save of the season.

Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland) (2-3) picked up the win for  SF State, pitching five innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out three and walking four. Amber Waracka (12-5) recorded the loss for Hawai'i-Hilo.
 
In the Gators' 3-0 loss in their opener to Western Washington, Ashley Jackson picked up the loss falling to 7-5. The Vikings scored one run in the first and added two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Sarah McEnroe (5-3) picked up the win for the Vikings, pitching 7 innings of five-hit ball whiles striking out six and walking one.
 
Alyssa Esquibel (San Jose, California, Archbishop Mitty) drove in the Gators' first run with a single through the right side that drove in Lea Cardenas in their game against No. 18 Grand Canyon. Cardenas reached on a double to right field. 
 
Grand Canyon took the lead with a two-run third inning keyed by Tracy Lubken's two-run single. The Antelopes added two more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 4-1 until Lea Cardenas (Sanger, California, Sanger)hit a lead-off home run in the seventh to make the final 4-2 Grand Canyon. 
 
Ivy Campas (14-3) picked up the win for the Antelopes, pitching 7 innings, giving up five hits and two runs while striking out three. Marisa Ibarra (Hollister, California, San Benito ) (4-4) recorded the loss for SF State. 
 
Cardenas and Esquibel each had two hits for the Gators, who will return to action tomorrow when they host Dixie State tomorrow at 2:15 pm in the Day Two of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock.
