SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State junior pitcher
Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent) improved to 10-8 on the season as she pitched a six-hit complete game shutout in the Gators' 1-0 win in game one of this afternoon's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader with the visiting Chico State Wildcats. SF State lost the night cap, 2-0 as the Wildcats' Kacie McCarthy (9-9) pitched a two-hit complete game shutout.
Jackson struck out one Wildcat batter and walked six while giving up six hits en route to her complete game shutout victory, her second of the season. She stranded eight Chico State runners on base including three times on third base.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when
Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) led off the inning with a single to left field. She advanced to third when
Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy) reached on an error which Herrada advanced to second. Gubbine then scored on what proved to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field by
Kendra Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook).
In the Wildcat seventh, Jessie Minch walked to lead off the inning but was called out as she left early on an attempted steal. Jackson got the next Wildcat to ground out. Then with two outs, Kelly Head and Charlotte Honciano had back to back singles, but Jackson retired the final out on a ground out.
Jessica McDermott fell to 9-6 as she pitched six innings of four-hit ball while giving up one unearned run and striking out three batters and walking one. Honciano had three of Chico State's six hits.
Four different Gators had hits in Gubbine, Herrada,
Kendra Wood, and Heather Jensen.
In the night cap, McCarthy pitched a two-hit complete game shutout for Chico State (20-17, 13-14 CCAA). She struck out four Gators and walked three en route to the shutout victory. Gubbine and
Kelly McDonald (Gilroy, California, Live Oak)are the two SF State batter that reached base on hits.
Minch drove in the only run that McCarthy needed with a two-out RBI single to left field that scored Rachel Failla in the top of the second inning. Failla reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Wieck. Then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Head and then scored on Failla's single.
Chico State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI single by Head that drove in Maddi Hillier to give the visitors a two-run cushion going into the bottom of the seventh.
McCarthy retired the Gators, 1, 2, 3, to preserve the 2-0 victory for the Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh.
Marisa Ibarra (Hollister, California, San Benito ) (6-7) recorded the loss for SF State (19-22, 12-12 CCAA) who will return to the diamond this Friday, April 16 at 1pm for a conference doubleheader with No. 12 Sonoma State Seawolves.
