MORAGA--- In the consolation game of the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic on the campus of Saint Mary's College, it was the SF State Gators defeating the NCAA Division I Jacksonville State 71-68 behind the trio of
Nefi Perdomo,
James Albright and
Griffin Reilly who combined for 54 points.
“We competed at a high level this evening for forty minutes,” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. “This was a good win for our program and we are moving in the right direction.”
The win by the Gators was their first over a Division I institution since defeating Cal State Bakersfield 76-73 in an exhibition game during the 2007-08 season.
Perdomo, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with a season high 24 points while dishing out 9 assists and recording three steals. The junior guard was 6 of 13 from the field while going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Albright finished with 19 points off the bench in 23 minutes for the Gators while Reilly added 11 points and 10 rebounds (his second double-double in the purple and gold).
“Nefi (Perdomo), James (Albright) and Griffin (Reilly) did a great job for us this evening,” added the second-year head coach.
Jacksonville State, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, took an early 10-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Gamecocks (2-5) increased their lead to 19-8 on a three by Grant White at the 11:14 mark.
The Gators outscored their opponents 20-9 in the next nine minutes to cut the deficit to 28-27 with 2:45 to go in the first stanza.
Jacksonville State's Mason Leggett connected on two free throws to give the Gamecocks a 30-27 lead going into the locker room.
SF State (2-5) continued its run in the second half as the Gators took their first lead of the game, 35-34) on a dunk by Albright at the 15:37 mark of the second half.
The Gamecocks took the lead back on their next possession and increased it to 41-37 on a jumper by Brian Williams.
The Gators would not cave in as they retook the lead on an Albright lay-up at the 12:15 mark, 43-42.
SF State increased its lead to 59-47 (it's largest of the game) with 3:08 left on Albright's made free throw.
This time, Jacksonville State would not go away, as the Gamecocks cut the Gator lead to 65-63 on an old-fashioned three point play by Leggett with 45 seconds left on the clock.
The Gators made 6-of-8 of their attempts from the charity stripe in the final seconds including Perdomo going 4-of-4 as they hung on for a 71-68 victory.
SF State's defense forced 22 turnovers by the Gamecocks while recording 8 steals including three by Perdomo.
Mason Leggett finished with 17 points for Jacksonville State.
The Gators will return home this Thursday, December 1 as they host Chico State in a CCAA game at the Swamp. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
